I am at a loss man this is a hard one for me. I would have love in the 60s to run against Branson, Larson, Foyt, Andretti, Parnelli J., and the like. I would have also to run in the 70 against the likes of Opperman, Bigelow, Sheldon Kinser, big Bob Kinser, Dick Gaines, Barr and the rest.

I think I would have liked to raced when the real "outlaw" racers were traveling the country from the mid 70's to the early 80's when the WoO were still running wingless races. So many drivers and many different tracks. The Big 3 when they were young and fearless, Opperman, Ferkel, Allen, Shuman, Lee Osbourne, Lee James, Shane Carson, Danny Smith, Tim Green, McSpadden, etc. The three big events were the K'Ville Nats., the Western World and the Pacific Coast Nats. at Ascot. Very important period in sprint car racing.

Sprint Fan I am loving the Paragon lineup of drivers you have listed. Those were the GOOD OLE DAYS!! One or two of them might even wind up in the pond before the night was over. Made for a great night of racing.

pletchfan,
I've got one just for you! I doubt anybody else recognizes most of these names but I know you will! Now don't get me wrong, I never had the gonads it took to race with these guys, but I sure wish I had! This would have been too cool! Feet on the pegs, crossed up, in a blue groove! The year 1974, The race AMA Flat Track, The Fairgrounds Mile at Indy, the racers; Kenny Roberts Gary Scott Gene Romero Rex Beauchamp Mike Kidd Chuck Palmgren Corky Keener Hank Scott Rick Hocking Dave Aldana |

DonRacer's comment about Victorville was right on the money. The open comp show was very exciting and the track has tremendous potential. Also my home track the PAS has to be one I will always support because of the tremendous racing. Sorry I have no desire to be a racer, just a fan.
But Brucer's remarks concerning the San Jose Speedway (not the fairgrounds) and West Capital were both right on and I really miss both tracks. Ascot of course for the history and tradition of the sprint cars. All of these memories are from the early 70s when I was much younger and probably more impressionable. The drivers in that era were such heroes and included Gary Patterson, Howard Kaeding, Nick Rescino, Johnny Anderson, his brother Billy, Leroy Van Connett, Jimmy Boyd, Dean Thompson, Bubby Jones, Al Pombo, Wally "Crazy Wheels" Baker and I could go on and on. The buzz in the stands when Opperman visited the west coast. Also Rick Ferkel. To me that was the golden era of open wheel racing and these tracks were so much a part of it for a young man just back from Vietnam. The beer tasted better, the country music was golden and the roar of the race engines and the atmosphere of being somewhere special will never be forgotten. ![]() |
