I always look forward to an opportunity to view a POWRi sanctioned race at Belle-Clair Speedway.
The first reason is that it brings me close enough to The 17th Street Bar and Grill at 1711 W US 50 in O'Fallon, IL that I can take a few extra minutes to drive out of my way to get some of their wonderful food. Best beef brisket I've ever had! No, I don't have a financial interest in the business; I'm just a huge fan of their cuisine. The second reason is that the races are always competitive and well run. Last evening was some of the best I've ever seen. The heats were enjoyable, but the features raised the bar to another level. What a finish in the 600cc Micros! Joe B. Miller, Jacob Patton and Spencer Montgomery's performance was simply breathtaking. But, the midgets had even more in store. Brad Kuhn led all thirty laps, while Brad Loyet was spectacular in trying to capture the win, the best show of the evening was the battle between Nick Knepper and his cousin Austin Brown. They exchanged slide jobs more times than I could count, with contact being made only once that I saw. The weather was near perfect and a kind lady on the front stretch made room for Earlene and me on the top row. This was only the second time my wife has ever been to Belle-Clair and she really was impressed with the great viewing that this facility affords. I bought Earlene one of the very colorful Arnie Knepper tee shirts, which made her really happy, and enjoyed a brief chat with Wanda Knepper as I did so. Kudos also to Jim Childers! He is always informative and entertaining. I appreciate being able to hear who is driving what. Other announcers could take a lesson from him. Since I sit on the front stretch, I don't see Andrew S. Quinn or the rest of the IOW gang during the races. I did see Randy Mortland as he was heading to the backstretch, but didn't get to talk with him. All in all, a very good evening; a great meal followed by an evening of exciting racing at arguably the best facility anywhere for watching midget auto racing and out the gate at a reasonable hour.
