Well you know I would enjoy this post Marv, Thank you. I imagine Dad was in the dreaded "Tin Indian" as people called his GTO. 4 years before I was born so I really enjoy the info. I was Lucky as I got to see Dad compete all the way into the 90's but these years intrigue me because of the legends. When I was younger we thought Bob Kinser was the guy who handed out trophies at Lburg because he was always in the picture with Dad but we were told that was the tradition to have the sprint and late model drivers get there pictures together. Theres one with with Dad and Gaines and a couple of others but usually it was Mr Kinser alongside him. Dad always says that after these two 100 lap features the track would try and suck your shoes off because it still had so much moisture. Try that around here nowadays in late June.
Marv don't know if you could answer but did any of the drivers do double duty? Likely suspects would be Ross Smith and Larry Moore as I see them listed in sprints. Also any idea what the late model times were? Also would be interesting to see what admission was for this as I can only imagine what they would charge for a show of this calibur today, This would be like having a USAC race and Lucas oil late models at the same show. |

I think the 85 car driven by Nordhorn was owned by Ross A Moore Excavating out of Bridgeport IL |

Follow ups:
jim goerge - I'm sure Illini8 is correct about the #85 car (Moore Excavating), but he raced and won in several other sprinters at Lawrenceburg including at least one of Dizz Wilson's and maybe later for Jim Walston. In late 60's into 70's with USAC Nordhorn drove, among others, Industrial Hardwood #71, Mauri Amerling's #4, and I believe he won his first USAC feature in the Neibel #6 owned by a VanWinkle out of Evansville. There are folks here at IOW who could fill in all the blanks and make corrections. Hope they will do so. Shane - On that night, just as you suggest, Ross Smith and Larry Moore were double dippers. Ross drove a #21 car (which I remember nuthin' about) to 2nd quick time, but was out of the top 10 in the feature. Larry Moore was in a #99 stocker (same number on his sprinter) and was an early retiree in the feetch. Chub Schnebelt also ran both classes. He scratched in the sprint feature and ran out of the top ten in the stock show. In other news I believe Chub was married to Pete Rose's sister or maybe they just dated. I know Pete would show up at the track from time to time. Others in stock cars that night who had now and then rides in sprints included Pat Patrick, Chick Hale, and Earl Smith. About the qualies, your quick timer Dad was in at 16.54 blowing away Ross Smith, 2nd at 17.39. Probably had traction control and one of them reverse thingy engines. Haven't a clue about admission cost. Don't let this get out but back then I had a bud on the pit gate very adept at waving me on through. Roy Matlin, Shotgun and Joe Noppert would get me for back pay plus interest. You realize your fendered questions will likely get me barred from IOW. Even I can't believe I kept that much detail on the stockers, especially with a cooler full of Burger. I must be off......

I just pity the scorers who would've had to work two 100 lappers in the same night. I don't know that carpel tunnel was a recognized condition back then, but they might have developed it in their writing wrist after this show.
