My best rememberance of Jerry was about 1980 or 81 at PIR.
Jerry was in a stock-block Chevy. He qualified towards the back, but was moving up pretty quick during the race. He finally caught up to Mario (in one of the Penske cars), and the battle they waged was without a doubt one of the greatest races I've ever seen until Jerry's Chevy finally let go.
They threw a yellow to clean up all of the oil, and when they finally towed Jerry's car around to the pits, everyone in the grandstands (and I mean EVERYONE) gave him one of the loudest ovations I've ever heard.
What a racer.

I was lucky enough to meet Jerry Karl over twenty years ago. It was a year or so after his fantastic run at PIR. He was still fired up over that run.

I remember watching Jerry qualify and race Smokey Yunich's twin turbo stock block chevy/Eagle. Can't remember the year (1973 or 75?) but, he was pitted right in front of us. At one point in time, that car was the fastest stock block ever to qualify at Indy.
