Joe,
From my perspective, the entire terminology for small sprint type cars needs an overhaul. Here is my take on the how it is now in Indiana and most of the midwest (at least in my opinion). Micro sprints are 600 (up to 636 in outlaw or open class) cc powered cars with the motorcycle engine offset to the left of the driver with specific chassis built for this class. These cars are ran wing and non-wing weekly at Bakersfield, US24 Speedway and Miami County Speedway in Indiana. There are quite a few tracks in Illinois that run the same classes. This class of cars generally run 10" wheels. In this class, the driver sits with his or her legs beside the engine and more parallel with the bottom rail of the chassis. Sometimes these cars are referred to as sidewinders, modified midgets, and some will refer to them as mini sprints as well. To me, mini sprint are full midget style chassis cars with 13" wheels that either run 600cc, 1000cc, or 1200cc motorcycle engines with the engine directly in front of the driver. The driver sits just like a midget driver in a more "upright" position compared to a micro sprint. Of the 3 previous mentioned tracks in Indiana, only Bakersfield runs the mini sprint class in non-wing. Thunder Valley Raceway in Salem runs the mini sprint class with the wings. I forgot the mention the AMSA in the earlier post and I believe they run 1200cc engines with wings in that travelling series. Probably clear as mud now. Sorry for the long post. Thanks, Jason |
