It was pavement in 1995 because I attended a race there in August of that year. Modifieds were the top class. The track had several different names over the years.

Former SCRA champion Richard Griffin won a AIS Indy Car race in the late 1980's.

Kamps was built by Avery Henry and was called Henry's Speedway. I can remember being there in 1975 and it being dirt. I am not sure when he paved it but it was that way for a number of years. It was sold to a group in Illinois that called it Benton County Speedway and converted it back to dirt. The kamps bought it at a sheriffs sale 7 or 8 years ago.

Last time I ran there it was pavement, had about 5 turns, and at least 3 elevation changes, surely they had to pull the pavement, to make an oval out of it, we thought we were on a road course when it was pavement. Bob

I think the one thing that hurt the attendance so much of the years was that no matter what night you went on you were going home covered in dirt. Every time I have ever been there it has been dusty. The racing was always good as well as the track and facilties. If they could have found a way to keep the dust down I think more people would have gone on a regular basis. JMO

Hopefully someone will purchase this track and reopen it and the public and racers will support it.
I'm confused. Was there something that the owners at Kamp were doing that caused racers and fans to avoid it, besides the horrible dust problem? Otherwise, I just don't see that the new owner would have any berter success.

I dont think so, it seemed that Bob and Gayle tried everything to get people to come. The had promotions all the time. Gave a lucky kid a trophy every night, they did alot to keep the fans involved in the nights events. The food was reasonably priced and the bathrooms were always clean when I was there and the racing was usually good. I even think the payouts were towards the top paying in the state. The only down side about going to Kamp for me was the dust (well that and no sprint cars, But I enjoy a good latemodel race) Other then put all new clay down, I don't know what else they could have done.

I hope this is not a permanent closure. I like the place.
