According to weather.com, it's supposed to be 54 degrees in Springfield Saturday morning. Might we see a new track record?

With rain (30% chance) in the forecast on Friday it very well could be a day of a new track record on Saturday. 4 years ago I was there on the Thursday night before the 100 for the tractor pulls and it poured. That year the speeds were unbelievable. It rained hard there today ad had some really bad storms go through Sangamon county. That rain will only help the track be fast.

Jon Sciscoe hoped to make it but will not be ready until Duquoin. He will be debuting in the series in the competition welding/Snyder provided by Chuck Snyder.

Unfortunately those storms also hit Logan County. Chris Urishs' shop was right in the tornados path. When I talked to him at earlier this evening he said the shop had pretty much imploded. When I asked about the condition of the champ car he replied he did not know, the shop was laying on top of it. At least no one was injured that I have have heard of at this time. Hopefully we can give him our shop and help get it ready for Springfield.

As of right now Bill will be at Bloomington's wing show on Friday. Saturday is undecided.

For all the disscusion about how low the car count might be Saturday, let's not lose sight of the big picture. It's going to be a freaking gorgeous day, and we're going to get to see a field of 20 some odd classic openwheel cars roaring down that big wide front straightaway to take the green at 1:00.

So what if the car counts are down from what they were 15 or 20 years ago? That just means that, with no last chance race, (a) everyone who shows up will get to start, and (b) there will be plenty of time between the end of time trials and the start of the feature to catch a lumberjack show, or see the milk cow, or see whatever farm animals are still in the barn on Saturday, etc. Will the racing on the mile be even half as good as what fans will be able to see the night before at Jacksonville or Macon? No, probably not. But we have all year to see slide jobs and "slip and slide, dip and dive" on the bullrings. Even if it's kind of a huggy-pole deal Saturday, it doesn't matter, 'cause the Springfield Mile is just a different deal.

Is the format itself conducive to good racing? I'd have to say "no," but again, we can--and do--debate the merits of various race formats and procedures all year long. Why not just enjoy the simplicity of two laps of qualifying, followed by the 100 miler?

In short, why can't we all just stop pissing and moaning about what the car count will or won't be, and just enjoy an awesome piece of Americana on what's shaping up to be a picture perfect afternoon in mid-Illinois?

Thank God Chris is okay. I was worried about that when I was watching the radar and started hearing the reports coming from there as I had some spotter friends who were tracking the storms.

For the record, there will be only ONE lap of qualifying for the Silver Crown cars, at least that was what was said at the drivers meeting at Indy Fairgrounds. I guess Sargent wants to make sure there is plenty of time for HIS premiere divison, the ARCA trucks! What a joke, he has USAC by the balls with the mile dirt tracks (somehow this one lap rule only applies to the mile dirts, and who promotes all them?). By the way, the track is packed SOOOO hard that it could rain all week and stop Friday and the track will still be dry slick by the second lap of the first hot lap session. Sorry to rain on your parade again but the days of heavy track and two grooves and gone. And whoever this illinoise guy is must not remember how freaking exciting Springfield can be with two or more grooves! It could happen if they prepared the track correctly, but last year at the drivers meeting at Springfield we got laughed out of the meeting for suggesting they water the cushion and not pack it down or scrape it off!! Unbelievable. As fans and racers we shouldn't roll over and let certain people single-handedly ruin SC racing. I'm glad he's willing to put up the money to promote these races, don't get me wrong, but as a paying fan and competitor we have a right to express our concerns over the direction of this series. The more the track has gotten drier and slicker and less competitive, the less fans you have seen in the stands. Its that simple. And one last thing, I think it takes away from the prestige of the event if everyone that shows up makes it, and we are one of the teams that would definitely be on the bubble if there were more than 30 cars!! We would much rather have it that you have to earn your way in, thats just my two cents worth!
