Kirk,
That makes no sense to me? That was, by far, the biggest crowd that I have seen there in years (not counting any Outlaw shows, I didn't see any of those)!! If they could not make money with that crowd... Well that's... To put it lightly... Goofy!!??? How many more people would they have needed??
Someone once blamed the back gate. If you added 10 more cars to last years race, that would be maybe 60 more paid pit passes. If that makes that much difference, I'll say it again.. Goofy!
I would also have to assume that the purse had come down from years past??? While not 100% on this, by what we got paid, I am assuming it came down. I am not sure if it was 1999 or 2000, we finished 16th and got paid $1,000. This year finished 12th, and received $825.
If you have some different information on this, I would love to read it!

If that happens I'll just go to Haubstadt instead.

I do love Du Quoin but I've complained about it before I really wish the folks in charge of the track would put up an effort in prepping the track a little. There is a tractor that usually rakes the track after the race. I'd just like to see them do that, add some water, pack it in good and let 'em go for 100 laps. The first night race in 03 was as good as it gets and it could/should be that way every time. I'm really hoping for a cool, cloudy overcast day on Labor Day this year.

That was straight from the source, Craig. And yes, the crowd was great, which was why they didn't see it as a possibly success this year. I'm not sure exactly how that happens, unless they got much less sponsorship than past Sumars, but that is exactly the reasoning...
