I'm surprised you replied like this without you doing a little research Derek.

For those of you concerned about Derek's reply, here is a link to the Federal Trade Commission website with the number on it.

You are right Tom I should have researched it further myself and I will retract my statement about the scam artists. But in researching it further proved my point that the context of your e-mail is false. Your cell phone numbers will not and can not be released to telemarketers by FCC law.....

FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/04/dnc.shtm

Also the only way that they could get these numbers is through a 411 service directory such as the one for land lines that have been released or sold to telemarketers. The wireless 411 service directory that was compiled in 2005 is an "opt In" directory meaning your number will not be on this list unless you provide it or give permission for it to be on it.....http://www.isxinc.com/newsevnts/2004/1130.pdf

I don't suppose anyone will really be harmed by calling the provided number, but this alert with the "3 day deadline" has been circulating for some time. I first saw this very message at least a year ago. When I get a message such as this the first thing I do is check the Urban Legends site. Most times I find references to it as I did this one. The Snopes site is usually on top of these things. Not saying all are scams, but the possiblilties are there. I have had cells for years and have never had a solicitor call. I have more problems with the solicitors that are exempted from the "no call lists" on my home phone. I certainly didn't mean for anyone to take offense. Just thought it would be helpful to provide a link to check out this and future suspect messages.
