A huge stretch? Not in terms of where the 500 ranks in comparison with other motorsports events. Overall public interest? Maybe. Betting? Is that really a good thing? It is still the largest single day event, of ANY kind, in the WORLD, even in the off years. 300,000 people, compared to 50,000 or so at the Super Bowl. And you made my point by saying it would be a one-off. I can still go to the 500 every year, sitting in some of the best seats in the house, not in the top ring in the corner of the end zone. And I beg to differ that the racing was lackluster. You just have to know what you're watching, an endurance event at over 200 MPH. Someone who loves Silver Crown racing (so do I) should understand that concept. Very few previous runnings have come close to the intensity of the past few years, even the "classics" that live in our memories didn't have the sheer volume of action. The Brickyard is lackluster; I can walk to the track and I haven't even thought about going in the 9 years I've lived here. I'll never miss another 500.

Just think of it as a donation for that infield dirt oval come 2019.

Second, it's good that you that you understand that, as much as we all love it, the Indy 500 is not remotely in a class with the Super Bowl in regards to overall interest regardless of what the numbers are in reference to the attending audience. That logistics and supply and demand due to being held in a different city and a much smaller venue every year along with heavy corporate involvement and the gambling aspect make it nearly impossible for the average sports consumer to attend it every year. The parallel is nonexistent. The third and most pertinent aspect of the conversation is that our particular seat location has gone higher in price per face value to the tune of 61% since our 2013 renewal in spite of demand being flat or regressive except for 1 major milestone year. And I further reiterate, the 61% figures out to over 10% a year. Was the 2018 500 experience 50% better and more enjoyable than in 2013? Will the 2019 experience be 61% better than 2013? If you think so I'd be interested in exactly what all has made the experience that much more exciting and enjoyable. Our seats are in exactly the same location, we can still see less than 1/2 of the track and the racing this year was indisputably less exciting and enjoyable. Not much more that can be said.

They've actually been having to lift in the turns, the drivers are having to fight these cars to a degree we haven't seen in some time. In both Indy and Texas we got two excellent races full of strategy along with top drivers hitting set ups and doing their thing. That's what the people want to see and the drivers want. A Twitter poll was put up after the Texas race and it wasn't even close. Of the over 600 people polled it was rated a good race at a 4 to 1 margin on one of the most negative social media sites known to man. BTW, that race that you claimed sucked is tied 7th all-time for lead changes at 30 and 1st all-time for number of leaders at 15. There are tweaks that still need to be made to the new aero, teams are still figuring it out, and of course the heat played a major factor in handling, but this is finally going in the right direction. No more Max Chilton's easily blowing by the leader due to a massive tow and leading 50 laps of the 500, no more NASCRAP style pack jobs that do millions of dollars worth of damage in one night and place unnecessary risks in the laps of drivers already performing one of the more dangerous job on four wheels. Those days are coming to a close. The racin' is over and it's back to Racing with a capital R. Can't wait for a couple of more years when the new engine package sees more horsepower.

As far as seat prices they must be upping the prices on the seats fans are most requesting. Come on over to the backstretch with me. Nobody wants these seats apparently no increase for me next year. So lets keep this a secret but I can see turns 2,3 and 4. not sure where you can see more. The crowd did seem down a bit this year but I bet renewal upgrade requests are heavy for the covered flag stand to turn one area where the bigger increases are. I am sorry to hear of such an increase for you. Maybe you could look at it the other way around and that you had been getting a great value all the years past. |

As far as "general" interest, maybe not; as far as in comparison with the rest of the motorsports scene, as Super Bowl ranks vs. the rest of football, I disagree.

These price increases should lift the local tv blackout.

I would think the existing price and increases could atleast put a chair back for every seat.
I know a lot of you old timers have the prime seats with backs and shade. But us young guys starting out it's hard to decide/justify to pay $100ish for ticket every year to sit in the elements, have no back rest, and not see all of the facility. Attendance is spectacular for now, but is it really sustainable, especially if you are upping ticket prices to pay for the NASCAR weekend? |
