Personally I coat my whole bar with a light coat of grease, to combat rust. I use graphite grease for the working end of the bar where it contacts the bushing. Bars must be removed, cleaned and regreased often, as dirt sticks to grease, and likes to work itself into the bushing. If left unattended it will turn into valve grinding compound.
