Last micro b main on track. Midget feature up shortly.

They run a fast paced program here.

I'll try to get the top 3. I'm also handing out the HARF award so I'll be busy.

4 of the best midget drivers in the country going at it with each other while racing clean. we just needed Larson there and it would have been a perfect night.

CLAUSON CONQUERS “BELLEVILLE BASH” NATIONAL MIDGET FEATURE

Belleville, Illinois.…..Bryan Clauson finished off the first “Belleville Bash” Honda National Dirt Midget event, co-sanctioned by both POWRi and BMARA, with late-race win to close out an exciting weekend of racing at Belle-Clair Speedway. The Noblesville, Indiana driver used a lap-28 slidejob on race-long leader Jerry Coons, Jr. to collect his 27th National Midget win, tying him for 13th on the all-time list.

Coons jumped from the front row to take the lead, despite a close slide from Brad Kuhn on the initial start. Kuhn tucked in line as Clauson eventually passed Austin Brown for third, with the top four cars pulling away from the field. After an early caution, Clauson moved by Kuhn for the runner-up spot as the race moved past halfway.

Clauson tracked down leader Coons on the long green run, with Tracy Hines finding the bottom to move to third and pressure Clauson for second. Clauson ducked low in front of Hines and peeked inside the leader just as a caution flew with seven laps remaining. Coons switched things up on the restart, trying out the bottom while Clauson jumped to the cushion, but a yellow re-appeared for Darren Hagen, who retired from the event.

On the ensuing restart, Coons was back on the top and held the lead over Clauson, who shadowed him on the cushion. Hines followed along on the bottom, with Kuhn nosing in as well. On lap 28, Coons bobbled off turn-two, and Clauson slid past for the lead with a full head of steam down the backstretch. He ran the final two laps mistake-free to take a .740-second victory in the Curb Records – Mobil1 #39 Spike/Esslinger.

“I just needed to get a clean shot at him, get a big run and clear him. I would get in trouble when I had to lift a little for him. I thought I might have been able to make the pass on the bottom, but I knew we were good enough up top that I needed to be up there. Our car was good all night, but it’s tough with the tight quarters here. Fortunately, we got the opportunity and slid up to the cushion quickly to get back going before they could come back at me,” Clauson said.

Coons held on for second in the Joe Dooling – Westin Packaged Meats #63 Spike/Esslinger.

“I just kinda got in the cushion a little too much coming off the corner and bobbled enough for him to get a run. There was nothing I could do – that was a perfect slidejob where he was far enough by me that I couldn’t turn and go back past him. The bigger the curb got, I just wasn’t quite as good. I tried the bottom on the first restart, but I could hear him up top, so I knew I needed to stick to my guns and make the cushion work. I was trying to minimize mistakes and felt like I did better towards the end, but that one bobble was enough,” Coons said.

Kuhn narrowly nipped Hines at the line for his second podium finish of the weekend in the Mason Cook – Willits Towing & Recovery #10 Beast/Fontana.

“It’s certainly good to put two podiums on the board after having some terrible luck so far this season. Mason Cook is a great car owner. He’s always thinking, and we have done some work with the engine to make gains. We got a little too tight for the feature, but we got better toward the end of the race. We just got behind those guys and couldn’t get back by. I’m happy to get third, but we had too many mistakes in the middle of the race to be able to recover,” Kuhn said.

Hines wound up fourth in the Parker Machinery – Turbines, Inc. #24 Spike/Stanton Toyota, while point-leader Chris Bell snuck into the top-five aboard the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports – Toyota TRD #71 Bullet/Speedway Toyota.

What a great 2 nights of midget racing at Belle-Clair Speedway. I dont know if the stars finally aligned perfectly for this weekend, but I talked to a bunch of first time visitors to Belle-Clair,some that have heard me talk about the place for ages, and in one case,a buddy from Australia that I saw Wednesday night at Kokomo, and he asked me where the happening races were held at this weekend, and I told him where I was going. Either way,in talking to all of them, they all liked the racing there, and from the sounds of the crowd when Jim Childers asked if they wanted the Belleville Bash on the schedule for next year,I'd say from the applause, the answer to that would be yes.

From talking with people, most like the idea of multi day shows at one race track.Much easier when bringing the camper along, and once your set up,your done,no extra traveling etc. There were certainly more campers seen there this weekend, than any other time I have been there,so I'd say thats a pretty good way to gauge interest on multi day races at one venue.

Along with the co-sanctioned race with USAC/POWRi,and Badger,it was also nice t have things going on between the Badger fan club,St Louis Auto racing fan club, and the Hoosier Auto racing fan club. The St Louis fan club had a meal for free for members of each club, and also there was some interesting memorabilia to look at from days gone by as well. Luckily for us fans that are members of each respective fan club,we were all able to get in at half price,$10. What a bargain! Thanks for having us over there.

So we had 2 nights, with 2 different tracks,a huge cushion each night, and also 2 lanes to race on. I saw some 4 wide racing at times, plenty of 3 wide racing, slidejobs, cross overs, slicing between 2 cars coming off the turns, wheelies, and even a couple of huge flips.Dont under estimate that just because its a small track, that big flips cant happen, because they can.Luckily,as I left, there were no apparent injuries from the big flips. Even with the race reports sent out its hard to really describe the action that was going on,as often there is so much happening its hard to put down into words of what really went on. Sometimes positions swap back and forth so many times in one lap, that its hard to keep track of all the action!

So if you werent there, you missed two great nights of action, and if you havent been to Belle-Clair Speedway, and its on your hitlist from any other place than the top of the list, then you should recalculate that list and put at number 1 in my view !

Everything you said is correct. It was my first journey there, and I loved it. I like how close everything is. The two covered grandstands right up against the track on both straights gives it a real intimate feel. It's like seeing your favorite band playing in a neighborhood bar. I'll be back.

A great weekend! I agree with all the race-related comments above. It was nice to be at a track which was so well prepared, even when Mother Nature threw them a curve and rained on them Saturday night. Can't say enough about how efficiently the program was run. A special tip of the hat to the emergency crews. Whenever there was an incident, the tow equipment and (when needed) the first responders were on the site very quickly and the track cleared fast. Saturday there were 10 hot lap sessions starting about 6:00, interrupted by rain and running the track back in. Six midget heats, four micro heats, 4 midget qualifying races, 2 micro "B" mains, some track maintenance, the "Real Bacon Bits" toss (you had to be there), and the midget "A" main was finished by 10:30. The announcers actually announced the lineups so you could write them down, the sound system worked, all the track people were nice, great fans, many IOWers, courteous drivers when leaving the parking lot, and really outstanding racing. This one had it all! Can't wait to go back.
