It is very nice to see an open wheel driver on the pole but you still must bring two suitcases full of money.

Actually Billy Boat in 1998 was the last open wheel grad to sit on the Pole for the Indy 500 in 1998.

Not to let any driver out, here are additional open wheel drivers who have qualified for the 500 pole. They are Rex Mays, Floyd Roberts, Ted Horn, Duke Nalon, Bill Vukovich, Dick Rathman, Eddie Sachs and Pancho Carter. Now you may go back before 1935 and find additional drivers. Anyway Fast Eddie is keeping good company.

& who has a big #7 Silver Crown tail tank off of Ed's car in his backyard? oh yeah, me!
Congrats to the little team who could. Just don't ask Mr Penske & Will Power what they think of this format for qualifying, you might not get the same answer. Now hoping a "pole sitter" can win the Indy 500, bob.

My goodness after further research this list of open wheel pole sitters really expanded and now includes Parnelli(how did I miss this biggie) Johnny Thomson, Jerry Hoyt, Walt Faulkner, Kelly Petillo, Lou Moore, Jimmy Snyder, Bill Cummings and Frank Lockhart.
