3 car crash, that's a fourth of the field at Salem now. No more "jumping in someone else's car" after a heat race crash.

I was there that day. That was one of the scariest things I ever saw. He must have cleared the guardrail by 7 or 8 feet while doing sideovers. Looked like a bullet leaving the barrel of a gun.

Yeah, that was Bruce Field. I remember that he was from Lockport, IL. I think the car was #3 and was white with red, green and gold on it? I remember he broke his arm in that deal.

It's all my lousy memory, but here it goes: The Gerhke incident that I recall was when he stuffed the Toyota midget under the guardrail at Salem near turn three. I was in the infield looking right at him. He was from Panama City, FL (had a Toyota dealership down there) and was doing the Toyota engine thing on his own without factory backing. The engine blew and he slid in his own oil.

Feel free to correct my recollection.

I was there the day that Caldwell went out and have it on poor quality 8 mm. I have it transferred to a VHS somewhere. Jan Opperman blew a tire and it pulled his car up into Caldwell's. He didn't have a chance to lift. Caldwell looked like he was shot from a cannon, and if I remember right, came to stop on a pile of bush at the edge of the Salem property line. Steve Stapp told me that was Opp's first ride on asphalt. Opperman was driving Stapp's blue No. 77 that Pancho Carter had driven that year -- 1973.

I was also there that night Bruce Field went out. They had to use a handsaw to cut him out for fear the vibrations from a power saw would stop his heart.

AND, I was there the day Mark Gerke crashed. Bob Lowe had worked all week to get the car ready and then it was trashed. Bob died of a heart attack in his shop three days later. Russ Gamester also flipped that day in the first turn and there was at least one other flip that day.

Don't remember the modified deal and missed the Stewart flip.
