from Brad (Marty's cousin) ...
Another good day.
He is communicating more with pen and paper. Today, he wrote to our cousin Lee on a note pad......"I want to go home Sunday" with a question mark.
The big news is he is off of the respirator. How he came off the respirator is not a lie. Turns out......ole Marty has a little bit of A.J. Foyt in him, because the doctors didn't remove the respirator........Marty removed the respirator himself!!!!!
That happened this morning, and as of 5 pm he is still breathing on his own, without the respirator.
The family issues their thanks for all the prayers and concerns.....it must be
working!!

From Brad ...
I talked to the nurse tonight, and she said he is still doing okay.
He's starting to talk a bit, and she said he seems more alert today than in prior days.
The talking is a little difficult for him. They think the vocal cords may have some slight scar tissue due to his self-removal of the respirator.
Also, he still has some respiratory secretions - so until he is healthy enough to cough that up, the talking will still be somewhat difficult. She implied that the difficulty right now in speaking is not stroke related.

Keep fighting Marty, Always a good sign. Still it's best to follow their orders and rehab.

From Brad Boyer ...
No real change in Marty from the last couple of days.
He tries to talk, but is still having difficulty. You can understand him if he's answering yes or no, but if he tries to talk in sentences, it's difficult to understand. Still don't know if this is stroke related, or respirator removal related.
Still on a feeding tube. They tried to see if he could eat on his own, but he was unable to swallow on his own, so the feeding tube is still in. No timeframe on how long.
If there are any changes, I'll let you know.
-------
Due to the fact that Marty's condition is fairly steady and there could be no big changes in his daily condition, Brad will be sending updates only when they are warranted. That means we could go a few days with no updates.
