I've seen them do it, and they do a pretty good job at it!

Eldora in the 80's and 90's was when the greatest practioner of this art raced. Jack Hewitt throwing a slider there was a thing of art. Watching him and Vogler go at it was incredible. You have to trust who your running with and they did.

As for Butler, he'd be dead by now. Hewitt couldn't save his a## everywhere. A lynch mob would have done him in eventually.:O::O::O:

If you want to see it done ,go to Haubstadt. There a good slider is just great racing. There it is ALL great.

A guy I met who was at Ascot quite a bit told me that slide jobs there in the 70's and 80's were handled under a gentlemans agreement that went as such:

1st time you threw a slider on someone that driver came and talked to you.

2nd time you did it he spun you out and maybe talked to you again.

3rd time and you were put on your head.

I see too many failed slide jobs these days. There are those who do it well, like Clayton, Stanbrough and such. Robbie Stanley perfected it on pavement. Unfortunately there are more guys that cannot do it right and make it just plain dangerous.

I also seem to remember Mr. Hewitt coming up short in one of the most documented "slide jobs gone wrong" in history, on Lealand McSpadden at Eldora.

Did anyone see the slidejob at Perris between Levi Jones and Tracy Hines? Both drivers thought the other could have given some ground to make things work.

No matter how good you think Clayton, Stanbrough, or whomever is at throwing a slidejob....at some point one will go wrong and it takes a supremely talented driver to be able to react and counter that slider with a move of his own. That race between Clayton and Stanbrough was full of short slide jobs, but luckily they were both good enough to see (or "feel" I guess?) them coming and make sure it didn't end up in a spectacular crash.

I heard from COUNTLESS drivers (most of them young, fast, and pushing to run up front) this year whining about how Dave Darland was the hardest guy out there to race. The hilarious part about it is that they were complaining about Dave knowing where to put his car in order to stop someone's momentum, or make them switch lanes, or just make them think he was about to crash them when he knew exactly how much room he had. I don't know how many guys I heard say that he ran in just the perfect spot that they didn't feel comfortable going to either side of him.

Some guys are just a little bit better at disrupting other drivers without actually planting a right-rear or nerf bar on a guy to make the move happen...

If you were there, you witnessed the "ultimate slide job" for the lead in modern racing history. It was the $15,000 slide job Blake Feese put on Tim Shaffer on the checker flag lap at the Hoosier Fall Classic (Lawrenceburg 2008) between turns 3 & 4. As a result, Shaffer and Feese finished 12th & 13th respectively. NOW THAT WAS A SLIDE JOB!!

cecil, that slide job there needed to end in a ass beatin. that was bad. seen the video three times now and you can't expect to be 8 car lengths back coming off 2 an expect to win without tearing something up. as for hewitt and mcspadden that is how they raced every night. balls to the wall...
