Not a lot of sprint car racing to show off to folks around here. I have a couple of co workers who have come out to watch us race the late model and now the modified, but nothing consistent. I make it a point to try and get more folks to come out, but without much luck. Unfortunately, with the way the shows are run in this area, some that to come out, don't come back (too many similar classes-hobby stock, pure stock, outlaw stock, limited modifieds, modifieds, etc.). Some tracks even try and run 5 or more classes in a night. Some features don't even get the green flag until well after midnight.

I have to explain to 90% of the people I talk to about racing, what a sprint car is. When the subject that we own a race car comes up, they'll ask what kind? and I'll tell them a sprint car. Inevitably, they'll ask me what a sprint car is. I haven't learned yet, though, because I still haven't put a pic of one in my wallet.

I gave up years ago. Most of my co-workers in a huge office at "Big Yellow" (before I retired from full-time employment) thought racing meant NASCAR. A few thought I referred to the local stock car events. One or two actually knew about sprint cars, so I had learned to mention racing to only those who would know what I spoke about. Sure cut down on time spent conversing about racing at work!

I'm retired, but still manage to run a Tq Midget on Social Security, so keep them Tin Top lovers on the payroll. Most of the posts I've read, are pretty much like what I hear, if it ain't got fenders, it must be a Go-Kart. Kinda like the Prestone Commercial, guy can't decide what lure to use, and fish jumpin everywhere, that's the kinda look I get when I mention Sprint cars or Midgets, "yeh, my neighbor has one of them, keeps it in his back yard". Since I am between jobs, I have no fellow worker to relate to.
But my favorite watering hole is a different story.

When I say I am going to a Sprintcar race, they think I am going to a NASCRAP show.(Thanks to Sprint for confusing people). They can not understan how I can go to 25 or 30 Sprintcar shows and still be around for the Sunday races on TV.

The best I have done is to get a guy and his son to go to The Little 500. They thought it was great, but they will not go anywhere else. They said the Little 500 was better than any NASCAR race they have seen, but they still spend their money at Daytona, Bristol and 'Dega.

What do I have to know how you can teach people that a 850 HP 1300lb race car is the most exciting racing there is.

I did get some girls to go to Gas City for a regular program, but they left because, even thought the Sprinters were exciting, they grew tired of all the support series. I guess I hype the Sprinters too much.

I guess if ignorance is bliss, there are a lot of happy people out there when it comes to racing.

Sprintcar racing is the best racing, bar none. Well maybe you could throw in SC or Midgets. Let the NASCAR crowd live in their poor diluted world. There is no help for them.

Yep... been there... and when I tell them about the pony's under the hood... you can tell, they don't believe a word of it. I guess I need to be that salesman that could sell a turd if he wanted too.:O: I've never met one, but heard about'em...

What's really funny is when they finally do go and see a race... they always come back saying... my gawd, them sprint cars are fast... Of course, I say "NO S--T."

The reaction when you're telling someone, who is clueless to racing, that you're goin' to watch midgets race is priceless.

It seems like once you fill them in on what it's really about, they seem less interested. :O:

I work at a place that employs 2100 people. There are a few who go but not regularly. One of my best friends owns and drives a midget, another has owned cars in the past but now his son now drives a midget full time. He's an excellent driver but needs some HP. There are a few who have raced micros over the years one of which has moved to ARCA recently. I wished we had a track here in So. IL that ran sprinters more often but Haubstadt is only an hour away not too bad.

My last attempt to introduce new fans to the sport was the 4-crowns at Eldora last year. BIG mistake. Everytime I see them now, they say they are still wiping dust out of their eyes. They joke that the cars "sounded" cool, since they didn't "see" much of them. Needless to say, they don't think highly of "dust track" racing and will never return. That's a bummer.
