They were doing it back in the 1930's when they would only have 4 cars show up at a track and they would start all 4 side by side.

Flagman Johnny Slawson used to do it in the late 50's for St. Louis Auto Racing Association only he would stand in the middle of the track and they would split 2 and 2 on each side of him.

See, it's a huge tradition in open wheel racing, but we don't know the answer. I'm amazed there isn't a definitive answer yet. Somebody must know.
