UPDATE

Greg Wheeler suffered a fracture to his C4 vertebrate in a crash on Saturday night during a non-sanctioned sprint car program Saturday night at Butler Motor Speedway. Wheeler had a successful surgery today to put on a halo and will see a lengthy recovery. Wheeler’s wife Sue would like to express her and Greg’s appreciation for the support for the entire racing community and the safety crew at Butler Motor Speedway for the great care they gave Greg at the accident scene.
Well wishes for Wheeler can be sent to 1757 East Brookeside Trail, Columbia City, IN 46725.

Greg doesn't wear a HANS type device. He has some kind of a pad like deal that goes under his belts. Not sure what it's for, other than maybe to not break collar bones or something. I haven't talked to anyone since Sunday, but I'm hoping to go see him Saturday.

This is exactly the reason that NOT ONE sprint car, midget, silver crown car driver should ever get in a car and strap themselves in without a HANS type device. It may have kept him from what he is going through right now?

I talked to Greg yesterday. He is home and in great spirits. Typical halo time is 2-3 months, but it looks like Greg will be out in 4-6 weeks. I guess being a tough, ornery old man (yes, I'm joking. Greg has become a good friend and a person I have incredible respect for) is paying off now. With time, hard work, and therapy, Greg should fully recover. What he decides to do with racing is up to him to decide. Just darn glad he will be ok. His biggest challenge right now is being like a deer going through the woods and not forgetting his antlers up there and not hitting them on everything. He said to tell everyone thanks for all of their thoughts and well wishes.
