I was lucky enough to park in the infield last year for the 500. It was nearly midnight when we got out of the lot at IRP and headed to the North gate off of 30th St. The line had yet to form, so we headed home to shower, re stock the coolers, and have a bite. When we returned at 3am the line was a good mile or so long. We were lucky to get in, and grateful as some of our friends were not in line before 5am and did not get in. The infield was full before 730. I would say that is a group that would pay!

After the Indy 500 is finished, I am usually home in Fishers (35 minutes north of IMS) at about 4:30 p.m. Parking in the infield, you might be lucky to get home by dinner time. Greediness occurs when a company exceedingly charges for something. If nobody was willing to pay the price, then you may have a point. When the parking passes sell out within one day of the announcement, maybe it's possible that IMS didn't charge enough. I will still continue to park for free in the infield on practice and qualifying days, but will go to my traditional parking spot for cheap that gets me on the road and home much more quickly than most anyone else. To me, this is much ado about nothing. If enough people are not willing to pay, IMS is willing to listen to you. In the meantime, those spots have sold out.

I agree 100% Richie BUT you really should be heading out of there and heading up US 31 to Kokomo to see the best race of the day I've been doing that for years. I get out so fast that the radio coverage of the 500 is not even finished by the time I get home, shower and head to Kokomo

If they would have said it was going to be $1 to park, I truely think the same people would be complaining. Indy car equals nothing more than a complaint session on this board. I really do not give a rats behind about parking. U want to park for free, plenty of places with about a 1/2- to 3/4 mile walk. I park right outside of turn 3 every year for $10. I walk about 3 city blocks to get in. I think IMS is stupid for not charging to park on there grounds. By the way don't forget after 5pm everyone can see the race for free!

True. I did go to the Little 500 in 2011, which was right after the Indy 500 that year. Actually got to sit at home for an hour and a half before I left for Anderson. I usually go home and watch the tape delayed airing of the 500 and fall asleep by 8 p.m. I get tired that weekend. I may not be getting any younger, but I am getting older.

I parked infield and still made it to Kokomo. Its not impossible since they start an hour later on 500 Sunday.

And since I now know the IMS infield is filling up, I'll make the call(or web more likely) and do it again this year!

edit: just got home and sent my $25 to help pay for the lights!

Back in the day...mid 70's the line formed when the gates opened for the north 40 at 5PM friday night and thats when the party began. Getting a front row spot in the infield back then was MUCH harder than it is now. At least until the reservations started this year. It doesnt matter to me I moved to the stands in the mid 80's, now I actually see the race instead of a colored blur
