As a fan...
1) SIDEWAYS, Dead nuts sideways, at the flagstand... 2) Sliders Sliders Sliders...a well executed slider is as beautiful as any performance art anywhere.. 3) Wheelstands..if theres even one little spot with grip out there somebodys gonna be carrying the front wheels off it.. 4) Multiple grooves...I have never seen a non wing race that didn't have at least a couple people moving successfully in an alternate groove, and typically there are 2-4 fast lines on the track for guys to work. 5) PASSING...most of the reasons above equate to lots of passing in a given race..Somebody always comes from the back to the top 3 or 5, the polesitter doesn't win as often..non wing shows typically have more of an invert built into the format, especially during the heats. As a driver/owner... 1) COST!!! cheaper engines live much longer when they aren't tuned on full kill, drivelines don't see as much wear, shocks and bars don't get as much wear, the chassis doesn't get flexed out near as quickly, etc etc etc etc 2) Equipment...I don't have to buy a new chassis from 1 of 4 manufacturers every 3 months. I don't have to have 3 of the newest 900HP Ott motors to compete...I don't get caught up in the "Portwork of the month" club...If I have an engine with old hilborn injectors that pulls smoothly from 3000 to 7500 RPM without a stumble I have all the engine I need. 3) Convenience of transport/storage...I don't have to have a 12ft tall trailer for the car to fit, I can push the car into a standard 2 car garage without taking it apart first, I can throw er on an open trailer without feeling like im pulling a huge sailboat sail thru the air, the small amount of stagger makes pushing the car by myself easier, etc etc etc 4) SIDEWAYS, Dead nuts sideways, at the flagstand...Sliders Sliders Sliders....Wheelstands...All the above add up to a much more fun ride..A winged car well set up can get to be like driving down an interstate...straight on full throttle cruise control 5) Style of racing...I know that I am less likely to get beat just by a checkbook, I know my experience is more likely to make me faster than some 16 year old rookie with a big right foot...I know that if my car is close on set-up I can hustle it from the back to the front instead of having to play a 30 lap game of follow the leader..I know success comes more from the driver being perfect than the car being perfect... There are literally hundreds of smaller reasons I prefer traditional sprintcar racing but the above reasons pretty much sum up why it's the best from of motorsport on earth. |

These 5 reasons come strictly from a spectator perspective.
#1. In my world there is nothing more beautiful as seeing a good driver gas it up big time and back it in on a well prepared dirt track. #2. A whole flock of good drivers in evenly matched non-wing sprinters backin' 'em in inches apart on a well prepared dirt track. I know the wingers race just as close but it appears, from the grandstands anyway, that the cars with the wings are somewhat more predictable than their non wing cousins. #3. The simple aesthetic beauty of a sprint car without the rolling billboard bolted to the roll cage. #4. The delicate throttle control that is very often needed to be fast in a non wing sprinter. #5. The crowds that frequent non wing sprint shows are generally somewhat less inebriated and more engrossed in the actual racing than at winged shows. That may be an unfair conclusion on our part and our intent is not to offend the wing fans, but it seems that way to us. The good hardcore fans of most any genre of racing are almost never the loud obnoxious ones.

I agree with alot of the reasoning except this one. and I know its just his opinion.
"QUOTE Jerry Shaw" 3)As a general rule, the fan base is a little more educated, down to earth and friendly. I Dont believe for a second that just because some watch wing sprints compared to non wing sprints makes them less educated or less friendly. |

Many people over the years ask me what is the differnce between wing sprint car and a non wing. First of all I tell them a sprint car is one without a wing and the other one is referred as a WANG car.
Then I tell them the differnce in races is that if you go to 10 Sprint car races you are going to see 8 good races. If you go to 10 wang car races you MIGHT see 2 good races. ![]() |

Can anyone tell me why a winged driver can adapt to a non-wing car quicker than a non-wing driver to a winged car?
