Was the Charlestown track on Highway 3 right as you're entering town? That's the location of the Podium One Motocross track, and I heard (or read) that the motocross track is on the grounds of the old race track.
Did anybody here attend any racing at Scottsburg Speedway (also called I-65 Speedway, I think, or Scott County Speedway). I remember hearing racing from my house when I was younger, and I remember a few years of good racing during the fair, back when Late Models were still pretty wedgy and radical-looking, at least to a 6 year old. Now all they do is Crate Lates and pure stocks and mini stocks come fair time. ![]() |

Two tracks in Greenfield, IN. 1/4 mile paved on US 40 across from Riley Park and 1/2 mile high bank dirt in the vicinty of 300 S and SR 9 on the west side of SR 9. Good research project.

The 1/4 mile paved track you refer to was probably the 1/5 mile concrete track that was known as Riley Park and Leary's Concrete Midget Speedway. It lived a short life, racing was only held from 1940 - 1942. After WWII boat races were held there but no more car racing. Another possibility is that it was a 1/5 mile dirt in which case it would have been the Greenfield Midgetdrome. It ran from 1941 - 1948 with interruption for WWII. The 1/2 mile was most likely the Greenfield Speedbowl also known as Leary's Speedbowl. It, too, lived a short life with racing only from 1947 - 1949.

Charlestown...... it is the moto-cross track now . The only sprint show I remember was an All Star show and Hewitt was driving the Nichols brothers old box . He had affixed a big tail rudder on the back .
Scottsburg....... It was at the fargrounds and they ran some LM and Bomber stuff in the early 80`s . Some guy fell through the bleachers and the lawsuit stopped the racing. Dan Hurst |

What about the Eldora mile track? Never completed and never raced on, but what a sight it would have been. A banked, dirt mile. Yikes.

![]() Is the Sullivan Speedway still open? I'm sure someone mentioned Dayton here a few days ago. Long ago I barely recall a track at Mitchell. Kevin B., is that right? They ran on Sunday nights. And I think my dad took me down there once.

Another one I miss a great deal is the 1 1/8 mile Nazareth National dirt track. This was the original track built on the site of what became the 1 mile Nazareth track that closed a couple of years ago. It opened in 1965 and ran until about 1973, was reopened in 1982 as a one mile dirt, and was paved in the late eighties. A monthly modified event was held on the big track. One month it would be 88 laps or 100 miles, the next month would be 100 laps or 112 miles. Qualifying was by three 8 lap heats and 2 8 lap consies - regardless of how many cars showed up. They averaged about 165 to 170 cars which meant 55 or more cars in a heat! Will Cagle won his heat one time from 33rd spot! They would take 15 cars from each heat and five from each consy making for 55 starters in the feature. Sonny Hutchins of Richmond, VA., driving for famed car owner Junie Dunleavey, started dead last once and took the lead at the white flag only to blow the engine and slam the 1st turn wall. The Old Master, Frankie Schneider, was the big winner at Nazareth National. The best thing about racing at Nazareth National was that there was a 1/2 mile track at the bottom of the hill that ran on Sunday nights after the show at the big track. Fans could just walk to their seats and many cars simply pulled from one pit area to another. It was a fabulous way to spend a Sunday!:thumb:

I'll change this a little. 3 tracks I wish I could have seen. Langhorne, Flemington, and the Sedalia mile. Probably belongs on a new thread, sorry.
