I'm not sure that the high costs of midget parts and components has led to the destruction of Midget car racing in general. Just because someone decided to pay upwards of $40,000.00 for a Midget engine didn't drive the fans out of the stands.
I believe that the down trend in all of open wheel racing can be traced first back to when the Indianapolis 500 mile race was taken off the table as a destination for most of the open wheel stars of the day. To that you would add the tremendous growth and interest in stock cars both at the local and national level , re: NASCAR.
As Bill France , Jr. was attracting unprecedented corporate sponsorship dollars as never seen before in all of sport , the premiere open wheel group was loosely organized as a not-for-profit club. No one was ready to lead and all of open wheel was seen to flounder. NASCAR was eating everyone's lunch and there was no leadership to attempt reversal.
All of the POWERi,s , BADGER's , NEMA's , IRS's , WOMS's , UMARA's etc. will not sustain Midget racing. They may hold their own as a localized or regional entity but only true sustained growth can come from the existence of a viable National Series on a national stage. That does not exist today. The Chili Bowl is as close as it get's , thus 283 entries.
Local Midget guys would set aside their unrealistic goals of making millions in NASCAR and would first aspire to ascend to the top level of National Midgets. But there has to be a clear and affordable road to get there and sufficient rewards after you arrive.
USAC lost their way after leaving the Brickyard and was overwhelmed by the fan and sponsor exodus to NASCAR. USAC must now assume the leadership to pave the way through an affordable feeder series to a National destination. It's going to be very difficult to do after so many lost years if not impossible in the economic climate that will prevail over the next coming years. But it's not too late to begin the climb back !

The Nascar Camping World Trucks are now running sealed engines...why can't these midget organizations?

The problem in midget racing is very simple. Go look at what a competitive sprint car that a "weekly racer" could go run with USAC, compared to a midget.
