I went from the mid sixties until it closed. Witnessed some of the more well known events. The Jimmy Smith exit through the trees off of turn two. Claire Lawicki putting the Benovich 54 under the guard rail so far and back out that they had to take the steering wheel off to get him out. Somewhere I have a photo of the car in the infield and the valves covers were missing and the rocker studs were even bent backward. The Larry and Gary show at Dayton was some of the scariest side by side racing you will ever see. Plus it also was always a question whether or not Sonny Ates was going to break the world half mile record in the Iddings 93. He just kept trading it back forth between Winchester and Dayton. Those were great times and fond memories.

Does it sound familiar to anyone that the old Fort Wayne Speedway, Dayton Speedway, and Salem (?) were basically carbon copies of one another?

Was at the Engle place on Cincinnati St.plenty of times.when my dad bought the old 31 car. I used to love Charlies stories about Shacklelford, Nazaruk etc. I wonder what ever happend to all the pictures he used to have hanging around, some were in the 2nd & Beckel location where he was murdered and some were in his other bar. Have you ever ran across anybody that knew what happened to those pictures Duke?
