SCORA at Danville (or lack of)

A lot of drivers and fans got excited about learning that Joe Spiker was going to run the SCORA steel block class weekly, along with the open 410 class at Danville this year. Now Roger Hughes says that there will only be 5 special races in favor of a crate late model series.
If PA and OH can run 410, 358, and 305 sprints on the same night, why can't Danville run 2? Forget that it's been known as a "stock car track"......BS, it was a DEAD track.....died at the hands of a stock car promotor who had no stock car fans last year to support it. Joe is now resurrecting it. Why in the world, when everything was falling into place, would they want to go backwards? This is a time of transition for Danville, so now would be the time for true change. If there are enough crates.....then I'd say run them. But with plenty of 410's anxious to come, and SCORA organized and ready to go with plenty of cars, why not? They have changed from Friday to Sat nights, and Joe has told me "Sprint cars bring fans", so lets run'm both. That's my opinion.....whats yours?

Crate Late Models are multiplying like jackrabbits. I know of almost 35-40 that will be running weekly at Brownstown from information gathered at pre season meetings. How many of them will run at VCS on the specials, I dont know? But hopefully it catches on.

Not me, I would rather travel to Danville to see a second division of sprints than the Crates

I have a dog in this fight. mscs20 is right, Danville has always had problems with staying open with the stock car class only. Bill Nelson a Late Model man made it very successful with Sprint Cars and great shows and respectible crowds. I am glad to see the Sprint Cars the major class at Danville. I beleive in my meetings with Joe Spiker that we SCORA would be run a good bit or as support to the Open Sprints. When Roger Hughes came into the picture things seemed to make a big change. He is a known stock car person and a salesman. I have not met with Joe Spiker since the races were cut, so this schedule with 19 crate races and 5 SCORA races were given to me from Roger. The last meeting I had with Spiker it was being discussed a weekly deal, about 18 nights. The first called I had from Roger he said we had been cut to 10 nights, then he comes back with this 5 nights schedule from mid summer to September. No races in May or July. Guys as far as I know Joe Spiker is still the boss and a very fair man and if not led the wrong direction should be very successful and till I hear from him directly, I will not put much faith in what Roger says. It is a no brainer why someone would take a chance on a unorganized group of crates as a major support series, when you could have an organized group of SCORA Sprint Cars with a guaranteed car count.
Cris Nunn, Brownstown is a Stock Car hotbed, so they will have the support of all tin top classes. So I feel that is where your heart is. Danville should turn out to be like Brownstown, only a Sprint Car haven for cars and fans, for Joe Spiker has great promotional ideas as long as he doesn't listen to the wrong people. Vermilion County Speedway should deserve your support. Sam Stockon Sr.

My decisions to have avoided attending the VCS sprint car events were always directly related to the number of tin top classes used for additional back gate by former promoters.
I dread that this "change" is leading back to more failures at VCS.

I know it doesn't apply here. But Id much rather watch a limited sprint than a Mini Sprint. The sound, the wheelstands ect. WE NEED THIS!

Well, I was a LOW buck racer myself long ago, and I can tell you that this SCORA series has made me preuse the classifieds more than once. I will not be strapping in again, but I can assure you that I would have been, or may still be a regular in the stands to watch the "low budget" guys like I used to be. To me, it's just better than watching the guys who have and always had more money than me. I sit toward turn four. Hope to see you there. Keep puchin' Sam.

First off..I for one would really like to see the SCORA Series become succesful. But to call the series organized at this point seems a bit premature. Where are the rules? What are the rules? Is there a list of racers that are actually going to show up at the track with a car?..or is this guaranteed car count based on "racers commited to being interested" (quote by Sam).
Running a limited sprint car class with such a vague set of rules will lead to heated altercations in the pits and at the SCORA tent. If someone shows up with a thumper steel block and a titanium car and starts to dominate, Sam has told me that, "there may be a question" (quote) And someone eventually will show up with a thumper...even if the race pays $25 to win.
This does not sound organized..it sounds like adding and/or changing rules in mid stroke.
I am not trying to be negative...just realistic.
The Danville promotors should be applauded for trying out weekly sprints...they are in uncharted waters...but in tough economic times I can understand their caution.
I would like to see the pits filled with 30 SCORA sprint cars, but in reality I think we will see 10-12 cars. Just my opinion. Thanks
Al Wissmiller

Sam my support is with VCS. Brownstown was a better decision financially for me.

I hate putting my personal life on here, but I am in the midst of a divorce, which means I need to stay close to home, I get my son on Saturday nights, and Brownstown is a lot closer than Danville is, and when the job was offered back to be at Brownstown I had to take it. My son can come with me, sit with my Mom and Grandparents and enjoy the races. Late Models and Sprint Cars are my main loves in racing, I wish I owned a track that could do both, like Joe is trying to do.
