Looking to get into the ford focus racing can someone tell me were is the best place to start ? I live in IN. We are coming from karts.:usac:

Not to try to be mean or discourage you however unless there is a large effort to save the Fidgets they are not worth investing in

The fidgets car counts and race schedule are incredbly small compaired to what they were 4 years ago

For a little bit more you can get into a full midget and be able to race UMRA, USAC Regional, Indoors, Mt Lawn (hopefully they do that series again) along with attempting any National shows you are interested in

I would advise you to get into a 1000cc upright mini sprint. They are very enconomical, faster than a full midget, and raced at the better tracks all over Indiana and Ohio. Go to the Midwest Mini Sprint Association website and and take a look and then get in touch with Bill May, the Competition Director of the MMSA.

agreed. Much faster and cheaper than the focus midgets, plus there are ALOT more places to race.

Just a question, for info only, unless you're interested in running mostly pavement, with small car counts, there are other options, that will get the job done, with a smaller investment, mini-sprints, and TQ's come to mind, mostly dirt, and good car counts. Bob

The advice being given here is not surprising as the transition from karts to mini-sprints is a logical step for a youngster and perhaps the best one , too.

It is a shame that the only person who would encourage your going to Focus would be the guy that is still trying to sell his Focus inventory.:wink

The car counts last year in the South East averaged about 14 - 15 per event.( a couple events had more) The West was slightly more or the same. From what I have seen the average in IN is about 9. So why discourage this guy? There are so many, used available Focus Midgets and parts that he could probably find a really good deal. I would agree - the initial problem with the Series was the mis-management of it by USAC - however it seems to still be around. "Unless theres a large effort to save them there not worth investing in" Does that mean they are all going to disappear? I understand that everybody has a right to their own opinion - however every time the Focus Midgets have been mentioned for the past 3 years on this a a couple of other boards - they are immediately admonished and discredited as "soon to disappear"....are their other interests here or just opinions?

How much would you say a decent, used motor would cost to run the above series? Probably 9 to 15K? The kid could get a decent, used Focus Car - already set up for the tracks he will be running, turn key for probably 15 to 17K...

31 Focus Midgets were entered at Turkey Night....and the majority of those were from the west coast - had the economy not been so bad there probably would have been quite a few more....

The focus series is a joke. They run all pavement tracks in Indiana, not good for drivers moving up to full midgets or sprints. With a mini sprint, you can get an 07 R1 to last all year for under $4500. Great turn key car for > 12,000. More bang for your buck, better tracks, better experience.

All depends on what the kid wants to do. I do not recall seeing mini sprints on ESPN and Versus - Focus Midgets have been. I dont recall mini-sprints running support races for USAC events with big name owners in attendance, Focus Midgets have been. Agreed, theres not alot of dirt events, though Focus cars run on everything from 1/4 mile flat tracks to 4/10 mile banked tracks....so in some cases it may be the safest route to jump into a minisprint first. Again -I am sure the mini-sprint route would be fine - the kid just need to know what the benefits and downfalls of each are, what type of racing he wants to do.
