Please keep the Bobby Gomph family in your thoughts and prayers. Bobby's father, mentor and best friend, Carroll Gomph, is nearing the end of his time on this earth. As of last night, he was still with us but, Bobby said it could be any moment. For those of you, on here, who aren't familiar with Bobby, he has been an employee (and volunteered countless hours, days, weeks) at Lawrenceburg Speedway since his early teen years, and as far back, as the days of promotor Ed Bennet back in the mid 70's. Bobby now coordinates and leads the best equipped, best trained and finest safety team of any short track in this country. We who race at Lawrenceburg regularly, feel so much more secure knowing that this crew is on hand and ready for any emergency. Bobby's father, Carroll, was a fixture and an invaluable asset at Lawrenceburg Speedway for decades, as well. Carroll volunteered 100's of hours to the track facility in just the three years I was promotor at the Burg. He helped promotors Ed Bennet, Carroll Hamilton, Myself and Mel Johnson spanning over 20 years. He was an expert technician in just about any of the trades and established a very successful HVAC business (Carroll Gomph & Son) that, I believe, Bobby runs to this day. This is a very difficult time for Bobby because a closer father-son relationship, I do not believe, could be found anywhere. As I receive information from Bobby and family, I will pass it along in this thread. Thank you. Craig Stevens
UPDATE: Carroll passed away Friday Dec 5th at approximately 7pm. Visitation will be Saturday Dec 13th from 2-4pm at the Fitch-Denny Funeral Home in Greendale IN

I am working out of town right now but Dad called me and told me to be sure to post on this topic. 1st of all Bobby has been very important to us as Dad says he always feels better when I am racing under his watchful eye. Bobby also pulled Dad out of a tangled mess or two in his younger days. I also will always remember Bobby getting out of his truck and coming up to my mod before he pushed Dad off in it for the legends night. We put the car in gear so dad wouldn't have to worry about shifting gears and Bobby was almost in tears as he told him what an honor it was to push him off.
As far as Carroll goes, it is no wonder where Bobby got it. Carroll was a big supporter of mine and a couple times gave me the $100.00 handshake. One particular night he had no way of knowing but that $100.00 dollars was what was able to bring me back the next week and we had a decent run that kept our season alive and we were able to finish out the season that would of died a month early. Their are many things I miss about the old Burg but I hardly ever think about that place without thinking of people like the Gomph's. Those are the people that made the Burg special.
