26 cars at Springifield yesterday...very disappointing.
As another poster said, 39 last year.

I think USAC needs to take a hard look at this. These state fair races are a chance for the series to shine and to expose their stars to the nominal fan. There are people that go to these races that maybe only go to the races a few times a year.

Couldn't USAC hit up local business for lap sponsorship or something? Try to raise more bucks for the purse to take care of the owners and drivers better.

Like I said, 7 to 9 thousand fans is a chance for USAC to really make a mark with fans and promote themselves, the series, the drivers etc....

Don't miss that opportunity.

I think maybe some of the other races going on might have had an effect on the car count. Seems I heard that a couple of the guys had the opportunity to race because they had flights back to another track or vice versa. It could have been more of a scheduling issue as to why there was a low car count.

It is up to the promoter to get lap prize money, not USAC. USAC is now trying to market themselves more, but they have nothing to do with bringing in purse money. They do have input into the the purse structuring, I believe, but they do not have anything to do with putting up the money.

I am sorry to hear that the car count was so low.I would expect that high travel cost {fuel} has alot to do with car count.

It looked like the grandstand was probably 20-25% short of years past, however the fair attendance they say has been better than years past mainly cause the weather has been excellent as it was yesterday.

This is happening just like everything else Sargent has been associated with over the years the car counts drop and the fans pay for it.When he took over the fair races the first thing he did was double the fans cost to get in to watch the race but did not raise the purse payout at all for the drivers and owners.

Seems to me that I read a few months ago that USAC did away with temporary permits in the SC division. That's means you must be a member to participate. I think it was something like $800+ to just register the car. I don't remember all the details. You have to somehow pay for that 18 wheeler USAC drives all over the country.
