She certainly has the right to sing whatever she wants to on her time. In this case she was asked to and agreed to sing the National Anthem before the Denver city council. This is nothing more than a blatant lack of respect.

This version is nothing new, it was originally called "The Negro National Anthem" and was written in 1899

To me, this isn't as big of a deal as many have made it, seems dragged out of proportion to me. Nothing was intended to be offensive about it, and the lyrics weren't necessarily offensive either. Plus, this country has worse problems that it needs to be worrying about, and I know for sure that everyone would agree that different versions of the national anthem isn't at the top of that list.

While I agree that this is a stupid topic for a racing message board, I do have a question as to why there is a "black National Anthem"...I mean, African Americans fought for their equality in this country, you'd think they'd want to share our Nation's anthem. ::sarcasm::

Whatever...

Just read on the internet that it was written for former president lincoln. Don't know how much truth there is to that if any, I'll try to find out.

EDIT:

“Lift Every Voice and Sing” was first performed in public in Jacksonville, Florida as part of a celebration of Lincoln’s Birthday on February 12, 1900 by a choir of 500 schoolchildren at the segregated Stanton School, where James Weldon Johnson was principal.

Singing this song quickly became a way for African Americans to demonstrate their patriotism and hope for the future. In calling for earth and heaven to “ring with the harmonies of Liberty,” they could speak out subtly against racism and Jim Crow laws—and especially the huge number of lynchings accompanying the rise of the Ku Klux Klan at the turn of the century. In 1919, the NAACP adopted the song as “The Negro National Anthem.” By the 1920s, copies of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” could be found in black churches across the country, often pasted into the hymnals.

Wow if the National Anthem isnt part of racing and sporting events then why is it played at every sporting event? I just put this on this post on here because many of the people in this country are not paying attention to alot of the facts that our happening to our country..If your only news source is the tv media i hate to tell you but you are way underinformed on many things in this country. When the national anthem is played i stand proud and always get a chil in my body because i am proud to be a American!
The sport of local auto racing is not doing very well and that is a fact. There is also a guy running on HOPE and CHANGE for this country!!! If you think this man is going to be good for auto racing or even the use of the internal combustion engine maybe you need to listen to a few more facts.
I didnt post this to make anyone mad,i just wanted to keep people on this board aware of some major hurdles we might have to jump in the future..

There was once a time that this song as appropriate, due to the way things were in our country, at that time. That time has long passed. There is only one National Anthem. More than likely, this singer just did this to draw attention to herself (something that the real National Anthem is used to do often, these days). She betrayed both the folks that hired her to sing the Star Spangled Banner and millions of blacks that are glad we had a Civil Rights Act, have moved on and just live their lives like all Americans do.

This is a DIVISIVE topic meant to take people's mind off REAL problems. This version was not sung at a race...so it does not belong here.

This smells of a diversion to stir people up. How many other songs are going to be linked to EITHER candidate?

George Bush is a big flag waver, National anthem singer, pork rind eater...but there has not been a WORSE man for our country in a LONG TIME if ever.
