Q: Is camping allowed at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis during events? A: Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis offers dry camping for the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. You can purchase that at the gate or you can reserve your spot early here. For more information about camping at Lucas Oil Raceway please call the office at 317-969-8600. If you are interested in camping with hook-ups, call Raceview Campgrounds, (317) 852-5737. Also check out their web page, here. Note: Raceview Campgrounds is not affiliated with Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. Would give them a call at the 8600 number to see for the track. I know the other campground is VERY close to the track so it would be worth checking out if you for some reason can't camp overnight at the track. Hope that helps! |

Third Generation Drivers Make Mark in Hoosier Hundred at Indiana State Fairgrounds
By Jay Hardin Track Enterprises Staff (May 18, 2016)-Indianapolis, IN-A historic racing venue in existence for 113 years and a historic motor race held on the same facility for the last 63 years are bound to produce competitors with family ties. Such is the case for the Hoosier Hundred held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds as third generation racing drivers are beginning to make names for themselves in a series whose ancestry dates back to the very beginning of motor sports, the USAC Silver Crown Series. The long-wheelbase championship dirt cars of the Silver Crown Series have a heritage that dates back to the earliest times of national championship racing and the open cockpit, single seat front-engine cars once were the featured attraction at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Given a separate series from the national championship in 1971 the cars quickly gained their own identity with second generation drivers like Gary Bettenhausen and Pancho Carter becoming champions in the Silver Crown machines. Looking at the record books it appears that the first third-generation driver (whose grandfather made at least one championship start) to appear in a Hoosier Hundred was the grandson of two-time Indy 500 winner Bill Vukovich. Young Billy III, whose dad Bill Jr. was a series regular, made the September 100-miler and finished 27th driving for legendary chief wrench A.J. Watson. Ironically nearly four months prior Billy had become the first third-generation driver to start in the Indianapolis 500. However, grandfather Bill never made a championship start on the Indiana State Fair mile prior to his 1955 Indy 500 accident. So, who was the first third generation driver to make a Hoosier Hundred lineup whose grandfather also started the historic event? Well, on September 28, 2001 the grandson of six-time Hoosier Hundred winner A.J. Foyt, A.J. IV started the night 19th in his grandpa’s famous number 14 and finished the race in 28th. May of 2002 saw the second grandson of a Hoosier Hundred starter, Dane Carter, grandson of Duane Carter (10th in 1953) and son of Pancho Carter (1977 winner) started 30th and finished 20th. Brother Cole would follow suit in 2006. 2014 saw two famous name third generation pilots on the entry list, Jarrett Andretti joined dad John as Hoosier Hundred starters, while uncle Mario won the race twice grandpa Aldo never made the starting field. Joe Ligouri’s grandpa Ralph is perhaps best remembered for a second place run behind Al Unser in 1970. Last year Austin Nemire joined grandpa Jerry and grandfather-grandson starters in the legendary Hoosier Hundred. Nemire and Ligouri are expected to return along with 30 other pilots in the 2016 Hoosier Hundred set for May 26 on the “Track of Champions” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. |

46TH “TONY HULMAN CLASSIC” WEDNESDAY AT T.H.A.T.; WEIR, THOMAS NOTCH INDIANA SPRINT WINS
![]() Brady Bacon leads the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship by 19 points as the series heads into this Wednesday night’s 46th running of the “Tony Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. *He finished on the podium in 2013 and 2014, but has yet to win the traditional event. *He’s never led the “Hulman,” but as a former winner at the “Action Track” in the fall of 2014 in the “Jim Hurtubise Classic,” Bacon has to rate as one of the pre-race favorites. Bacon heads to Terre Haute on the heels of three consecutive runner-up finishes at Rossburg, Ohio’s Eldora Speedway, Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway and Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway. *His lone victory this year came at Montpelier (Ind.) Motor Speedway in April. One of America’s most revered open-wheel events, Wednesday’s race should include at least five former race winners. They are defending winner Robert Ballou, 1993 and 2014 winner Dave Darland, 2010 and 2013 winner Jerry Coons Jr., 2011 winner Chris Windom and 2002 and 2007 winner Jon Stanbrough. *Darland, Coons or Stanbrough could join Cary Faas and Levi Jones as three-time race winners. Nine drivers have scored victories in the first 11 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car races in 2016, including two new 2016 winners this past weekend in Indiana. Kevin Thomas Jr. of Cullman, Ala. dominated Saturday night’s 30-lap race at Brownstown, leading all 30 laps in his Franklin Equipment/CEP Concrete DRC/Chevy. *Bacon was second ahead of Darland, Meseraull and ProSource Fast Qualifier C.J. Leary. *The victory was Thomas’ first in the series in 15 months. Scotty Weir of Marion, Ind. finally ended his search for his first USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature victory after 115 starts since 2004 when he captured Friday’s “May Meltdown” at Gas City in his AAA/Carts & Parts DRC/Claxton. *He passed Bacon on lap 17, slipped behind Bacon on lap 21 and regained the lead on the white-flag lap! Trailing runner-up Bacon were Thomas, Max McGhee and Tyler Courtney. Meseraull was Friday’s ProSource fast qualifier while Chad Boespflug, Chase Stockon, Courtney, Leary, Stanbrough, Justin Grant and Shane Cottle won preliminaries sponsored by Simpson Race Products, Competition Suspension, Inc., Benic Enterprises and Indy Race Parts. *Thomas grabbed Friday’s KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award at Gas City and Ballou was Saturday’s KSE Racing Products/B & W Auto Mart Hard Charger at Brownstown. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPCOMING USAC AMSOIL SPRINT CAR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT: DATE: Wednesday, May 25, 2016 SERIES: USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship TRACK: Terre Haute Action Track (Terre Haute, Indiana) - ½-mile dirt oval EVENT: 46th “Tony Hulman Classic” featuring the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars and the Scott's Custom Colors UMP Dirtcar Modifieds. We are attending all 3 events and hope with scattered showers that you don't pull the plug too early. Have already paid for rooms, and taken vacation time from work. I do understand with tracks located in town that you can't run at 2 in the morning. Good luck to you and us. One of my favorite weeks of the year.

TERRE HAUTE’S “HULMAN CLASSIC” TO OPEN UP USAC'S “WEEK OF INDY”
Courtesy of Track Enterprises The highly-anticipated USAC "Week of Indy" has arrived! It all begins with this Wednesday, May 25 with the 46th annual “Tony Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track for the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship. Last season, damp and frigid weather set in on the originally-scheduled “Hulman Classic,” forcing a postponement. Eventually, the race was made up in conjunction with the “Jim Hurtubise Classic” in September. In that race, Robert Ballou charged from the 10th starting position to take the victory, one of his 13 series wins in 2016. This year's “Hulman” will be followed up with the 62nd running of the “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis on Thursday, May 26th. That event will feature the USAC Silver Crown Championship. The final race in the "Week of Indy" marks the pavement debut for the USAC Silver Crown Series in 2016, at the .686-mile Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Indiana on Friday, May 27. The 100-lap “Carb Night Classic…The Race Before the 500” Silver Crown affair will be held in addition to races by the Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship presented by Mazda. A three day adult SUPERTICKET is available for a 25% savings at just $60 to see all three events. The voucher will be good for a general admission pass to the “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute and the “Carb Night Classic…The Race Before the 500” at Lucas Oil as well as a reserved ticket to the “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. To purchase the three day SUPERTICKET, visit https://usacracing.ticketspice.com/the-week-of-indy. Pit gates for the “Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute Action Track will open at 3:00pm. Grandstands will open at 5:00. Hot laps begin at 6:00, while racing will take the green at 7:30. General admission will be $25 for adults, $15 for the infield, and children ten and under are free. For more information, visit www.terrehauteactiontrack.net, www.trackenterprises.com and www.usacracing.com.
