Good news! Jim Childers announced last night at Belle-Clair that the Battle at the Center will be run on Dec. 20th. This race is run in the Southern Illinois Center located on the DuQuoin, IL fairgrounds. Be there or be square!
This is when it was run in 12. Its a darn good show for indoor racing, Had three wide racing and they actually had to keep the surface a bit wet from getting too fast Which it didid about lap 20-30 of the feature
Had ten heats, two consis, four qualifiers and a feature.
Seating is first come first served so get there early, get the pit pass and walk around and chat. Well recommended!
Oh and skip the pretzels, If i wanted a pretzel that was actually a donut, I'd ask for a donut.
Powri ususally list a flyer with all the details, When, I have no idea. Last years was cancelled on a forcast of 14 inches of snow. But 2012 had 68 midgets. I think I got there at 3-4 got the pit pass and they raced from about 6-1030, They rework the track often but depending on what they do only takes from 5-15 minutes. just enough time to catch a Restroom break now and then.
Absolutely happy that The Battle at the Center is back. The Southern Illinois Center has put on some GREAT midget AND micro racing since it has started hosted racing.
The Southern Illinois Center opened on Jan. 21, 2007 (high temp that day was 17 degrees), with a program of 600 & 1200 mini sprints; ran the same program on Feb. 18 & Mar. 18. In 2008 they ran on Jan. 19 & Mar. 29 with a program of 600 micros & POWRi midgets. My records don't show a Feb. race; not sure if they ran one. Don't see anything in my records for 2009, but in 2010 they ran 600 micros & POWRi midgets on Mar. 27 & the first Battle at the Center was run on Dec. 18th, 2010. In 2011, they ran on Dec.17th; in 2012 it was Dec. 15th and last year the scheduled date of Dec. 7th was snowed out. The first year those were Sunday afternoon/evening races.
