The biggest problem wasn't so much having just 14 cars on hand. (And, let's be honest, Bateman and Lawson were so dramatically far off the pace that it was essentially an even dozen, since USAC weren't going to let them stay out there for long.) The biggest farce was the FIVE that actually finished. Kody Swanson got the "hard charger" award despite being the last physically finishing driver. Thankfully, Jarrett Andretti's yellow set the stage for a great finish to salvage a dud of a race.

On a more positive note, you couldn't have asked for a better day weather wise.

I would think that Gateway is a lot harder on motors that a dirt mile. If that's the case, I would much rather see two races at DuQuoin or Springfield than one race at Gateway

The best silver crown race ever was at Gateway. Been several years ago. JMO

Would someone please tell why some teams boycotted this event (another example of the president retirement fund)?

Nope. We needed to look no further than the black dust on the floor pan. And, all over Tanner's face.

Somebody with an Indycar team needs to put Bobby Santos III in a car for the 500.
