At last! While the motor builder may be a scumbag, he has the right to run his place of business. One cannot take the law into their own hands. There are courts, laws, and ways to deal with anyone that cheats you. Like Jerry says, all that the guys that went there did was open themselves up to a LOT of potential issues.

I have no dog in this fight, either, but taking the law into your own hands just ain't right....and if the motor guy is really as dishonest as some say, why don't some of you have the nerve to name him, if only to protect others from his shady dealings? Or are you afraid of a lawsuit? It's hard to be sued if you state facts, not innuendo.....

Taken from a post above

Charles Snyder, 59, told police that Botts was with William Throckmorton, two other men and a 16-year-old girl about 1:15 p.m. Sunday when Throckmorton came to the garage and told Snyder he was taking an engine that Snyder had been working on for Throckmorton, according to a police report.

There ya go

Regardless of who may have been right. Once thing remains certian. Throbert screwed up big time. A police officer should know better than to hold a man down at, what sounds like gun point, and take a sprintcar motor. Being a cop, Botts should have been the voice of reason...

Whoa! No where did it say Rob Botts held anyone down. All I can say is you do not know the whole story nor do I. In he was there yes, but did not do as you say that is for sure. This is a VERY complicated matter, just think before typing.

Yes there are courts and laws, and I have tried to follow that route, and were has it got me no were,if he has nothing because he has hosed everyone how do you get your stuff back,I was told 3 times I have your stuff come and get it less the money i had paid him,Everytime I went there I got a another excuse,I dont have time come back next week, I did and still nothing,I went there with my co-owner who has know the guy for 30 yrs, and all got was the run around and threatened, not with a gun thank god!! So what do you do,ya you wanna kick his a*^&* but if you do, you will be out more then you are because the court system will work for him, when he is in the wrong. So what do you want all of us to do that have been screwed just take it, or go there and risk getting shot,I agree no engine is worth getting shot over but no one needs to be cheated out of there stuff and them get away with it !!!! My co-owner is a very honest buisness man and would never treat anyone this way!!! So if you wanna bash me more speaking my mind ok go ahead,

Just remeber the crook has all the rights in this great Country we have built! The victim always has their rights violated and rarely sees compensation for the said crime. Just like the police officer is on trial not the ******** accused of the crime, if you dont believe me you are welcome to come to court with me and watch me testify.

In reading all the posts, the only probelm is the local police were not called to the scene after the off duty officer made the scene safe for all involved. I hope everything works out for Rob, I wasnt there and the armchair QB never sees it as it happens.

I hate to hear this on any police officer....we are held to a much higher standard than anyone else and I believe we should be. However if we mess up we have much more to loose and the courts always feel obligated to make an example out of us. Now when some CEO cheats his entire company's retirees out of their retirements they just go somewhere else and run another company. We can go and get another police job....

Again I hope everything works out for Rob!

You can go through a court of law, spend thousands on a lawyer, win a judgement, only to be told by the court that "you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip" when it comes to collecting the judgement. My home was burglarized for over $15,000 (cash and jewelry) a few years ago and the criminals were caught. They were ordered to 3.5 years in prison and to make restitution. That money and jewelry was gone within a few hours of them stealing it. The prosecutor later told me, on the side, that there was almost no hope of recovering a penny from these people. If the engine builder had the money to pay the people he ripped off, back, he wouldn't have to be ripping people off in the first place. I seriously doubt that he put all of his crooked earnings into a savings account. Once he sells your "hard earned possessions" off, they're gone forever. I will be astonished if jjsprt92 ever sees any part of his motor or, the money he is owed in lieu of the motor. He'll just have a lawyer to pay for trying to squeeze "blood out of a turnip" using the legal system. I completely understand the frustration of anyone who has dealt with this man. With all of the trouble so many people were having with this guy, I was astonished to see the Throckmorton's sprint car in his shop when I went up to get my stuff out of there. I knew it wasn't going to be a happy ending.

I find it hard to comprehend that our legal system can't force people like this to pay. What would be wrong with giving a suspended sentence, putting them on probation, and making restitution a requirement of probation? If they don't make payments in the slammer they go. And probation doesn't end until full restitution is made. The real threat of jail time might persuade some to conduct their business differently.
