2000 zx9 with dyna 2000 ign. any one know how to set the timing. i replaced the head gasket put the cams bac in brought #1 up top and lined int up with rear case top and ex up with the front case top but soon as i tighten caps down the valves open a little bit on #1 intake and the engine wont turn please help

Stock tensioner or do you have a manual style one? Sounds like you're getting some extra tension on the timing chain somewhere. That might be the issue. Just a thought.

stock tensioner i found a paper that said the cams might be degreed 101-102 intake and 104-105 ex would this make a difference

Sounds like you got the cams out of sink with each other and the crank. Gears should have marks that line up with top of head when #1 is a TDC. I usually turn cam on #1 cylinder until both in and ex lobe are at the same angle (EYE BALL) pointing down and in toward the center of the of the head. That means that the overlap is split on #1 at TDC. You can also see the cam lobes on # 4 cylinder pointing out toward the top an the same angle pointing out. The Valve springs will usually hold cam there, both lobes should be pointed down at the same angle, tighten the caps up slowly DO NOT tighten one cap all the way and then another (you could bend cam) once all the caps are down all the way and torqued, check one more time to make sure cams are still at same angle with each other, if they are install the cam chain tensioner (it must be backed off first) turn the motor forward slow and easy if it meets resistance stop that is probably a valve hitting the top of a piston AND forcing it will bend a valve or two and you are still out of time. Turn the engine over two complete revolutions if the marks are in the same place again you are good to go. DO NOT TURN THE ENGINE BACKWARDS!!!!!

thanks i finnaly think i have it we will find out monday when i get it finished. but it finnaly lines up all the marks and turns over with 31 teeeth in between cams. rolled it twice still 31 so hopefully it is good. my biggest problem was not having any marks on the crank. but thanks to all for the help

FYI, the 31 links between cams means nothing, how could you change it? Sounds like you might have it close to the cams being in time now. The cams run at half engine speed, which means a 2-1 reduction by the crank gear and the cam gears/sprockets, so no matter how many times you turned it thru, you would still have the same number of links between cams. Before I tried to touch it off, I'd google "how to set cam timing" on your particular engine, you could still be off far enough to mangle the valves, which is not a good thing. Good luck, but I'd double ck on google, to find out if it is indeed right. Bob
