That's why.
When you are "Number One" you can call the shots, everybody else can get in line. So why the hell does Indy Car want to get in line. They need to work on their product and presentation.
That's the way the Speedway and USAC looked at things in 1977-78.
And look at what happened to them.
USAC thought they had Earl Baltes over the barrel on race dates. Who else were they going to get? Then Ted Johnson came along with an alternative.
The same with the Speedway, and suddenly there was another series called CART.

The Speedway was the Speedway and USAC was USAC and they were both a little too big for their own pants. They did both kinda of complement one another however. I think what they found out after the split was that one did not work as good without the other.
Between the switch to rear engines and the in-fighting between the groups they lost out to the new kids on the block and by the time they got back together a little bit the damage was already done. It was Mr. Holman's dream, and he was gone. Damn them British!!
The Speedway is still around.
USAC is still around.
CART....not so much!
If they want to fix Indy Car racing they must first fix the cars and put the engines back in front like most Americans would like to see. A sleek modern day roadster. It wouldn't matter where the driver's came from that race those cars.

You sir are just too simplistic and behind the times.
Everyone know that race cars should go both left and right, they should be powered by green fuel and or electricity. They should get between 100 and 150 MPG, and go 200 mph with a 60 cubic inch motor. They should be at home either on a dedicated race track or our city streets (more challenge dodging manhole covers) and drivers should be chosen by their families position in the global economy and their ability to bring home the bacon.
You just don't know nothin about real race cars!!!!
It's simple. Listen to the fans. They are the ones paying the bills for the car owners. Without fans, the car owners have nothing to present to sponsors as a reason to give them millions. It is not all about the car owners. They need to swallow their egos. They talk the talk about loving fans, but ...

I don't want to see front engined cars at Indy. I just want American circle trackers to get an opportunity to prove they can drive the rear engined cars just like Foyt, Parnelli, Gordie, Mario, Rutherford, the Unsers & Sneva did. These guys all adapted effortlessly to the rear engine cars and had great success against the best that Europe(F1) etc. had to offer.....
