TATE MARTZ WINS AT THE SHELBY COUNTY FAIR
On Saturday evening the Midwest TQ Racing League presented by Vincennes University competed at the Shelby County Fair where two-time and defending champion Tate Martz of Rushville came out on top of a hard fought battle with Nick Speidel to score his second win of the season. Speidel started from the pole position and jumped out to the early lead at the start of the twenty-five lap feature. Speidel and Jason Willis pulled away from the field until a lap thirteen caution for a tire that was knocked onto the racing surface. Speidel held the point on the restart over Willis, Martz (up from his eighth starting spot), Tad Cheek and Rick Robinson. Before a lap had been completed the red flag waived for a Brayton Leisure flip in turn one. On the restart Martz passed Willis and set his sights on Speidel. The racing action was slowed once again on lap nineteen when Chris Mann came to a stop on the backstretch. With Martz restarting on Speidel’s bumper he began to apply heavy pressure on the restart. On lap twenty-one they raced side-by-side down the front stretch and into the first corner before the red flag waived for a multi-car accident in turn three. Cody Kiewitt and Scot Quintel both flipped collecting the cars of Jon Steed, Will Wilson and Corey Eaglin. When racing resumed Martz tried both high and low to get around Speidel. Going into turn three on the penultimate lap he finally succeeding with Willis also getting by Speidel to take over second place. Martz went on to lead the final two laps in the Roger Ramsey owned Vincennes University/Old Canal Smokehouse #1 three-quarter midget scoring his sixth win on the Shelby County oval. Willis, Speidel, Cheek and Robinson rounded out the top five. Brett Hankins set the fastest lap in qualifications with a time of 19.270 seconds and Robinson won the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel. Heat winners were Willis, Martz and Kiewitt. Corey Eaglin was named the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race and Kiewitt’s misfortune in the feature earned him the Duane & Sonja Alexander Hard Luck Driver Award. Jon Steed won the drawing for the Jackson Oil & Solvents gift certificate. Anderson’s Mike Alley held off Travis Rodgers, Elliott McKinney, Bradley Coleman and Jeremy Morris to win the IOFS Compact feature. Jordan Turner and Greg Sims were the winners of the eight lap heat races. The next race on the MTQRL schedule is Friday night July 15th at the Jefferson County Fair in Madison, Ind. I must have heard about ten different people raving on this race last night at Lawrenceburg. Must have been a great one
![]() Talked to Staab in the stands a bit and he said it was under a blanket the whole race and nobody had any idea who would come out on top till the checker flew ![]() ![]()

Well I guess no grader was good. Bob, im sure you remember that night in 1998, when we had to have a drivers meeting to decide on racing or not because the track was so rough.

Saturday night's race was very exciting. It looked like Tate was going to get the pass only to lose position to a red or yellow flag like last time at Shelbyville. And Nick did some fantastic driving through lapped traffic. Greg does an awesome job with the track and has lots of help from the Shelby County Fairboard. Add the talented drivers that we have and wow, you've got edge-of-your-seat racing.
Bob, I'm with you on the bull rings. They are my favorite. |

When they rework the fairground tracks throughout the night, it significantly improves the quality of racing and makes for a good show. In the feature it was a very fast hammerdown track with a nice cushion, track conditions were ideal. would be very interesting to see if anyone got any lap times in feature.
