An Emotionally Charged Victory
for Jerry Coons Jr. & the RW Team

October 19, 2010 - Fueled by the desire to support and honor their teammate Shane Hmiel, the RW Motorsports Silver Crown team returned to the track on Saturday, October 16th for the Rollie Beale 150 at Toledo Speedway. Jerry Coons Jr. was set to take on the rest of the field in the #27 RW Champion Brands, Toyota Beast.

Coons Jr. took the early advantage by setting fast time in qualifying and grabbing the pole position for the feature event. Just a few days after Hmiel’s accident at Terre Haute Action track, the entire RW team gave him the most fitting tribute, bringing together the best they have in the shop, in the pits and on the track. The effort delivered nothing less than what Shane would expect of his team- a trip to victory lane. Assuming the lead from Jacob Wilson on lap 59, Coons took control of the race and never looked back.

Jerry has often commented on the support he and Hmiel provide for each other during the season: offering his expertise on the dirt tracks and Hmiel giving his tips for the pavement ovals. Saturday’s win was Jerry’s first on pavement in the Silver Crown division, making the day especially meaningful.

With their teammate forefront on their minds, the crew assisted Coons Jr. to pull the #17 car into victory lane alongside the winning #27 Champ car. “Our team is a close-knit group”, offered owner Steve Weirich, “We share our challenges and our victories. Being able to pull together and win this one for Shane is just an amazing thing – and I’m certain the team made him proud today.” ♦
