'61 Indy 500

Looks like A.J. Foyt is gonna get his first Indy 500 win......but wait.....the Bowes Seal Fast Special # 1 had a refueling system malfunction......Foyt can't make it to the checkers.....he stops again for fuel.

That gives the win to Eddie Sachs......but wait.....the right rear on the Dean Van Lines Special is showing cords. Will he risk it and stay out. No.......Eddie comes in for new rubber.

Foyt wins his first. And the rest, as they say, is HISTORY. I was excited enough to keep coming back through 2003.

1. Opperman beating Pancho at THAT with Bubby 3rd in the Hulman in 1976 ( I think). The background was that many (USAC) fans were bad mouthing the "outlaws", maintaining that they weren't even in the same ball park with the USAC elite. Back then, you were basically either USAC or not, without the great crossing over we have today. Of course, USAC led to the Speedway in those days, too.
2. JJ's last lap pass to win the Silver Crown race at IRP in 2003. I was there and I have watched the DVD and still can't believe it. He went from not even being in the picture to winning. This set him up for the Hoosier 100 victory 2 days later and the extra cash which went with the sweep.

Bloomington when Darland shreaded a tire coming to the flag and Stanbrough nips him by a bumper.

Birkhofers last corner pass on Scott Bloomquist at the 2002 World 100 is my personal favorite

1980 Bettenhausen. Pancho catches Olivero in the 4th turn of the 100th lap for the win, riding the cushion to track him down. Troy Rutherford also had a great win at Granite City in about 2003.

For those about to rock, we salute you.
