I worked on both of Duke's cars you have shown. The older car was a cutdown Watson roadster. Bobby Grimm drove it in 66 I think,as the last Watson roadster to qualify at Indy. Duke drove it as the last Watson roadster to win a USAC feature.
The newer car was a Nance car of course.Duke killed one of them at New Bremen alright. Laverne Nance just welded him up a new one. Somehow Duke got him to give him Nance chassis kits for free.
Duke used to say that he painted the car red , white , and blue to confuse the drunks. On the front straight they'd see one color , on the back stretch a different one.
Duke was a pain in the butt back then too, but I wouldn't trade the times I spent with my dad and Duke for all the money in the world. For all you young guys , you have no idea what you missed, AND IT REALLY WAS BETTER BACK THEN.

AJ just finished returning one of his cut down Indy cars, back to it's original condition, the chassis had been narrowed, and shortened, and of course the body work was gone, it was a bit over a year in reconstruction, but the new owner took possession just a couple of months ago, I think he also used up the last of the new Offy blocks he had. Beautiful car then, even more beautiful now. Bob
