I think this is a case of you don't understand until you do it type of thing. Unless you do it for a while, you can't explain all that goes into it.

Renting a car is like anything else, to do it right you have to make money at it. Depending on the situation and taking everything into focus, $4,000 is about right.

That said, you can get going for about $10,000-$15,000 and if you are lucky and are smart, you can run all year and have some fun for not much money.
