I will add something to the story, even if it is fairly insignificant. Jeff Bloom told me that the speeds were the fastest he had ran up to that point, and in the first hot lap session the air had his head pegged back into the seat and was trying to pull his helmet off. Pulled in and they found a piece of plexiglass to make a windshield with....made from the side window of a custom van.

The payout was nice for a SC driver that day....$4600 to start. That would be like 10 grand these days.
