"Listen, we're going broke," moans one racer. "This is like a crash on Wall Street. I'm just real thankful that nobody can get hurt too bad by jumping off a pit wall."

"Costs have skyrocketed in the past few years, and there seems to be no end in sight,"

"The racing body has been living on heroin injections for the past 10 years."

"This is an ideal opportunity to make careful cuts in the cost of racing that will place it, economically, on its own four wheels again. But they've got to move fast or we'll all be out of business."

Quotes from 2009? .... No, how about 1974... the good old days.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Jerry,

I find this very hard to believe. Superduke says it was so much better back in the old days.

I remember a telling comment from Carl Hugness in the early 70's in his Racing Cars Magazine. He said something to the effect that if racing was such a big deal, as we would all like to think, we wouldn't need sponsors. the ticket revenue would cover the racer's costs. He went on to say , can you imagine Reggie Jackson with a sponsor's name on the back of his jersey?
MLB is now playing with the idea of putting sponsor's names on uniforms.
People have been getting out of racing for ever because of increased costs.
"If you can't afford it, get out." BS nothing but BS, only said by people who can CURRENTLY afford it. Obviously we are are own worst enemies.
Just some random thoughts
