May have said this before but bears repeating, Drivers if you wear dentures or partials remove them b4 racing, may choke on them in a crash. Deodorant should be used AFTER the races, the human body sweats to cool itself off. & PLEASE use it on the way home, other riding w/ you will appreciate it. All metal of any kind should be removed, if it gets hot it will stay hot longer & cause a nasty burn. If it's a medical alert tag put the info on your helmet, EMERGENCY CREWS take note if driver is breathing ok leave the helmet on. Especially if driver is unconscious, unless you need to remove it for some other reason. But take it to the hospital if driver goes, Docs at hospital will like to see where the hit was. T-SHIRTS UNDER THE FIRESUIT this is a pet peeve of mine. A soaking wet t-shirt will get you burned quick, it's like boiling water. Firesuits stop the fire, they stop the heat but not forever. The fireproof underwear is a lot better, it compliments the suit & adds time. Do you race at a 1/4 mile w/ walls or a 1/2 mile w/ no walls. How long will it take the rescue people to get to me. If they don't have one or an ambulance LEAVE, it's your life how long do want to live it. You AHHH won't happen to me, got news for you - theirs a million others saying the same thing. It's gonna happen to somebody gang be smart be safe

And, just as a fan, one thing i notice on the wave lap is so many "bare" hands out the windows of the stock car classes. One of the cheapest safety devices you can buy and always remember, fingers DON'T grow back. Safety first, my biggest wish is to have high car counts with great healthy drivers behind the wheel.

Bare hands drive me crazy!!! You are not in the car so long that its to hot to put glives on. Sprint cup drivers race for four hours and they have gloves on so somedy racing a 30 lap feature has no excuse. I am firefighter and i am completely covered for hours at a time. There is no reason that someone driving a race car can not be as fully protected as possible from burns.

Glovesshould have a leather palm but the fire proof material should also be behind that leather patch & 2 layers. When skin grows back it's not as durable as your regular skin, It cracks easily, bleeds a lot & not as flexible. I've seen someone burned 3rd degree over 70% of his body the week after it happened. Not a pretty sight. Believe me drivers you're playing Russian Roulette & you will pay the consequences.
BOOTS never ever wear leather boots in a race car, leather shrinks in a fire & has been known to break bones in your feet. That is very painful, I broke a bone in my foot. It was the smallest bone in my foot & I couldn't even walk on it. Take of yourselves drivers ![]() |

Had a conversation w/ a driver at the races, asked me where I got my info from, Rick Nichols & I talk every so often (not often enough), Bill Simpson, articles in magazines, trade shows, Curt Tucker at Team Tech Safety Gear, experiences I've had being involved in racing since 1968.
Told him about seeing Simpson holding a fire proof cloth on fire in his bare hand for over 20 min. Dave Despain got so nervous he asked to put it out. Take care of yourselves guys, I love racing but do not like the crashes. God Bless ![]() |

I had my left hand burned pretty bad when I was a kid (non racing) Bad Dad 54 is right about the skin and how it's not as flexible after. Getting your hands burned really really sucks! I didn't race much, but I never got in the car without wearing fireproof gear from head to toe.

A driver was burned badly on Sat. at Charleston,IL. He wasn't wearing gloves either!!!..Jay Gordon is his name..If you have seen photos of Mel Kenyon, you should know what fire does to the Human Body!..If you can't afford safety gear to race, then find a new hobby,I'm just sayin!
