I have a small mark scribed to the top center of a rear torsion bar tube, on each side of the car. I measure from there to the rear of the axle on both sides of the car to square the rear axle. I do this with the car sitting on the tires, and it's one of the last things I check before I load the car in the trailer.

Bill, thanks for the reply I usually did it from the firewall but it was always so hard to do that way with the seat etc in the car. Your way seems easier as long as thre tubes are straight, I'll have to look and see if theres sufficient space to measure that way.

You need to do it, as far out on the rear axle as possible, which means having a straight edge across the motorplate, and measure back to the front of the axle, I use a piece of 1/4 X2 aluminum, on edge, clamped to the motorplate, and the rear end on stands, with the weight on it, and measure as level as you can, back to the front of the rear axle, just like tramming the head on a mill, the further out you get, the more accurate you will be. I tried Bills method, and if the chassis isn't tweaked, it is a quick ck, but not completly a true measurment. Then, on a car with a torque tube, you'll need to ck it again, on the tires, on the ground, usually you will need to tweak one of the radius rods, to get the torque ball free, the stagger skews the rear just enough, to make this happen, plus, you really need to ck it again with the driver in it, and you may need to tweak again. I think this is an approved method, I know it has worked for me for many years. This is a somewhat abreviated version of how it's done, but gets most of the detail in it. then you use the same setup, to square the front end, then you can pull the left front back what you want, and know how much lead you have in the rf. I believe French Grimes wrote this for Open Wheel magazine, years ago. This is available in greater detail on google. Bob!

On my car, and all the ones I built, I made a simple bracket, to hold the rear end in the center, and at the right distance from the motorplate, and at the correct height, so once that is in place, all I have to do is make sure the birdcages are in time, and adjust the radius rods, plus tweek them with the stagger and weight in it on the tires. Takes about 10 minutes to install the bracket/saddle, and you're ready to do some measuring. And, of course you can use a laser to meaure with, that makes it a bit easier if you are working by yourself. KISS! Bob!

If you are just wanting to square the rearend in the car. Find the center of the front crossmember and drop a plumb bob from the center to the floor. Drop a plumb bob off each end of the rearend to the floor and measure in a triangle. You can use one plumb bob just put a dot on the floor with a sharpie. Take a file or cutoff wheel and cut notches for the string to lay in for future reference. Make sure to remember your measurements so you can alway's go back to it.

Or, you could use the " 3-4-5" method! The Simpson's forum is one frequency to the right! Bob
