How many I.O.W.ers remember this vaunted, toe to toe Non-wing Sprint car rivalry?

+1 !
Two of the best Scrapers of our time to ever strap in,bar none! Lot of drivers come and go fast these days,,heading from the bullrings,to NAPCAR land...
FYI, The Sam Man won just last night-(Sat 14th), at The Ditch with a brawl ensuing after the race!!! Didn't I say Scraper...

Take Care,

I turned four in 1981. I only wish I could have been old enough to remember those two go at it wingless in those days. That was the last year the Nats. was wingless as well.

Didn't Steve say something to the effect that he was tired of Sammy's face smacking his fists?

I'm sure I was there. I didn't miss many WinterNationals those years. The racing those first few years of East Bay was fantastic. The first year, there were over 100 cars. Everyone ran every night. There were two 25-lap non-qualifier races each night. The first lapping of a car occurred in the second non-qualifier on the fourth night. I especially remember one night when Bobby Davis was 3rd in turn two of the last lap, but passed Doug Wolfgang and Steve Kinser to win.

Then, the wings came. :-(
