In yet another race where the point leaders Dameron Taylor and Kyle O’Gara went toe to toe like a pair of heavyweight boxers, O’Gara won Saturday’s round at the Lincoln Tech Indianapolis Speedrome. Taylor grabbed second while watching his margin over O’Gara slip to just 56 points.

Qualifying set the tone for the 50-lap feature event with O’Gara nipping Taylor by just 0.010 second to set fast time. This separated the two drivers into different heats which they both won. When it came time for the feature, the two drivers lined up on the second row with Taylor getting the inside spot following the USSA draw for inversion.

At the drop of the green flag Simpson Indy Rookie of the Year point leader Trey Osborne jumped to the lead from the pole position. With Taylor and O’Gara racing each other and Logan Huggler, Osborne led a five car breakaway featuring Taylor, O’Gara, Huggler and his brother Ryan Huggler.

O’Gara passed Taylor for second on lap 27 and moved into the lead to stay on lap 33. O’Gara wasn’t content to sit on the top spot as he lowered the Mel Kenyon Midget Series Indianapolis Speedrome lap record three times to 11.926, eclipsing Taylor’s old mark of 11.989, on lap 43.

Osborne came home in third with Logan Huggler and Ryan Huggler rounding out the top five.

After putting 10 races in the books, the Mel Kenyon Midget Series is in the middle of the closet point battle in the history of the series. In addition to Taylor and O’Gara, Logan Huggler jumped back into third ahead of Ashlea Albertson by only two points.

With five races remaining on the 2015 Mel Kenyon Midget Series schedule, no driver in the top 11 in championship points can consider his or her place in the standings safe. Only Kent Kriegbaum in seventh has a cushion of more than 100 points.
