Thanks for the mention of Richie Evans, one of the greatest racers of all time. It is spelled without the t, however. Richie won 9 NASCAR National Modified championships and close to 500 features on at least 38 different tracks in a spectacular career cut short that terrible morning of Oct. 24, 1985 at Martinsville. Modified racing still feels his loss.

Thanks for the pictures of Richie. He was one of the best I ever saw and a great guy to boot. I saw a lot of his wins, even one on dirt.

Growing up in Western NY, saw Richie run many races at Lancaster Speedway against some stiff competition with the likes of Maynard Troyer, Jerry Cook, the Treichlers and later on some cat named Bodine. This was back in the days of the old coupes and coaches.
Richie always had the trademark orange 61 with a black V on the roof. After moving South to the Martinsville area, saw him win there and I've got some great photos of him in my old photo stash. Fortunately, I was not there to see his tragic accident. He was the first of a trio of greats that perished due to stuck throttles (Evans, Charlie Jarzombek and Corky Cookman). Those were great days in the mod world. |
