For any race group to be successful they need cars. To get cars involved they need either a very good purse or a very good incentive to encourage racers to show up and race. We learned a long time ago that the points championship while nice to have on your resume did not in fact add up to a lot more than a Jacket and very little cash. We love racing and even got caught up in the points thing a couple of years ago. That time it was not so much for the points championship but to help Bill May and the MMSA with car count as much as we could.
We all know that we have guys racing for the points championship only. Driving more conservative just trying to finish races and showing up every week to give them a better shot at the title.
When something comes up and a racer has to miss a race, his attitude will change after that incident. Now he thinks what the heck I'm not racing for the championship anymore that race is just too far away "SO"I think I will stay home again.
The MMSA started out as a traveling show. In the last few years we have been content to run at a few local tracks and not venture too far from home, because of the price of fuel and the economy in general. Well now fuel has not come down and local tracks are feeling the pinch of the economy too and it looks as if we "MIGHT BE ON THE ROAD AGAIN", as old Willie would say. That sounds like a lot of fun but also a lot of expense to the racers. Why don't we try and squeeze a hundred dollars or so out of the race purse each race, hit up a few business people--- racers to advertise in our points fund and make a points fund something worth chasing>?
The most races that I think could be dropped from the points would be two maybe only one. For the races out west why don't we add like 50% to the race points all the way from sign into and all the way to main event points. Give the racers a reason for going to the races.
