Hernandez clean sweeps MMSA on night one...young Texas native Anton Hernandez had a perfect night out for the Midwest Mini Sprint Association at Brownstown Speedway Saturday night ,best of 18 entries for the opening night!
From the word go he had the night every racer dreams of, pole position heat one! He would lead heat one from start to finish on his way to a solid starting position for the feature event. Following Anton to the checkers in heat one was Cody Trammell and Cory Clay after starting in the 9th in the heat. Cory would accumulate the most passing points by going from 9th to 3rd, which would put him in the invert 6th starting position for the feature. Heat 2, hot shoe Justin Lewis, showed that he will be one of the top dogs in 2018 with his first heat win of the season. Justin coming off a nice 2017 season with the runner up position in the chase for the points in MMSA and 7th place in 2017 for USAC national points. Jessie Vermillion and Ethan Rutherford would follow Lewis to the checkers to finish the preliminaries. Thus set the field for the Amain later in the evening. Feature rolled onto track with Ethan Rutherford benefitting from the MMSA rule invert for the P1, joining Ethan on the front row was Jesse Vermilion. As the cars took the green they went three wide into turn one Lewis, Rutherford and Hernandez on the top. The top proved to be the way to the front, as Hernandez would take the top spot before entering turn 3 and never looked back. Cody Trammel from 5th would chase the leader down and put all kinds of pressure on Hernandez. Lap after lap Trammell would hound the leader, he tried the top, he tried the lower side but just could not get the bite he needed to over take the lead. Justin Lewis setting in 3rd position was ready to pounce if the top 2 had any issues with one another. Lewis would finish 3rd. Rookie Brandon Coffey would have a very nice start to the season, he would be the lucky dog to have the 10th starting position in the Amain for a chance to claim and extra $100 with a win. He may not have won, but first race out from 10th to 4th has to be a great feeling and confidence builder moving on in 2018. Cory Clay would come across 5th and Rutherford would have to settle for 6th. The rest of top 10 were Jesse Vermillion, Cindy Chambers, Keith Arvin, and Kyle Hathaway. The feature event took 6 minutes and 25 seconds to complete our first event for 2018. Hats off to the 18 MMSA entries for a successful opening night. The 2018 MMSA season rolls on into North Vernon this weekend Saturday night April 28th, at the Twin Cities Raceway. |

Columbus Indiana's Justin Lewis grabs first USAC event under the MMSA banner for 2018.
Saturday night Justin Lewis took his OSR Motors, Double L Transport, P3 Grafix, Columbus Collision, Wedon Performance, and Hoosier Speed backed ride into victory lane at Vernon, Indiana. Lewis raced his way to a second place finish in his preliminary to give him a solid fourth starting position for the feature event. First heat was won by Ohio's Anthony Haas, followed by Lewis, Colin Miller to round out the top 3 Second heat winner Cody Trammell bested last weeks feature winner Anton Hernandez for the top spot with Cory Clay bringing his ride in 3rd. Setting up the feature event the prelims put Miller and Trammell on the front row with Lewis and Hernandez in row two. The green flag waves on the feature with Trammell getting the jump on Haas and the field. Clay would use the low line to hold the top spot for several circuits. On lap 7 Lewis would go top shelf and take the lead. Lap 10 caution would fly for a spin in turn two. With the cars restacked Lewis had to defend the lead from Trammell and Clay for the remaining laps. Lewis would do just that takingthe high side, riding the berm, taking in the cushion to claim his first feature win of 2018. Top ten were, Lewis, Clay, Trammell, Haas, Miller, Chambers, Coffey, Arvin, Barr, and Hernandez. Every entry Saturday night was capable of taking home the win, for each and every car has won an event in their own rights, by way of a championship, feature, or some major event. Great to have top quality teams on hand. Next event will be at Lincoln Park Speedway as a show with The 31st running of the Putnamville Clash paying $3100 for the non wing 410 sprint cars Saturday May 5th. |
