Yes I'm sure and yes I saw that funny thing that looked like a dune buggy on the inside of row 6

Cages were mandatory starting in 1971. Maybe that is Steve Chassey in the Dowker roadster in row six. Jeff Bloom also ran a roadster.

Long shot, but row 6 car could be Dave Roarig in his own design,or maybe Paul Leffler's rear engine design sometimes driven by Ziggy.

It looks like there are some cars in that field without cages.
Those were the days when racing was dangerous and sex was safe.
It's a little grainy but when you blow up the photo it sure looks like the cars on the inside of rows 4 and 5 are cageless. I know it sounds crazy but that would put this photo at 1970 at the latest. And if it was taken in 1973 there would be rear engined cars in the race.

I enhanced the picture as best I could, and even used a magnifying glass. It does appear there are cageless cars in the field, which would make this a pre 1971 event.
